Advantages: Great sound quality, suitability in most vehicles (set-up and appearance).
Disadvantages: Boy racer theme?
When I got my first car I was obsessed with the idea of having perfect sound quality - as this would impress my mates and give me the ideal listening experience as I drove along each day. I searched around for some speakers as the ones in the car were the originals and had little to no power capability. JBL sound systems have always been respected and often preferred by consumers interested in good sound quality - giving out good bass / treble balance and a crisp, clear sound not achieved by other alternatives.
These JBL 'Grand Touring Series GTO6527S' are an exceptional example of what technology can do for sound quality in vehicles. They are designed to sit on the back shelf, or be imbedded into the interior of doors of any vehicle with space in these areas. Each of the two speakers are exactly 16.7 cm in diamter and tjhis must be considered before purchase so that the area you wish to instal the speakers is definetly large enough. The system adopts a 2-way passive set-up which is 100% wired and therefore requires wires to run the lenghth of the vehicle into the stereo system at the front (if the speakers are fitted into the back shelf of the car/van).
The tehnical performance of the speakers is sensational. The bass can be jolted up to an impressive height, whislt retaining the crisp and clear sound qualtiy consumers are after. matched by a great quality treble level, the balance can be altered massively to suit each user, and this is done through the player system in operation. The type and form of CD player / DVD player, etc which is fitted and connected to the speakers will alter their performance, because the player is the amplifier and its quality matters. Also, the player might offer additonal features to enhance the sound or offer such types of sound as 'movie', or 'radio' formats.
The look of the speakers may matter to some consumers who are bothered about the appearance of their quite possibly 'pimped' vehicle. I like the look, the JBL Grand Tourer's aren't too in your face, but they do adopt the kind of futuristic, metalic image many boy racers wouldn't be ashamed to have on display. Furthermore, the speakers (which have a power output of 55 watts, and a band-width of 60 - 21000 Hz) don't stick out too much and could well be sealed visually from view if the original look of the cars interior doesn't want to be 'spoiled'.
Overall I have been very impressed with the aesthetics and sound performance of the product. It's not too OTT, but the addition of a suitable aplifier these Grand Tourer's can be tooted up, giving a massive high quality sound. Their look many not suit the majority, and I doubt their look does anythingto enhance their performance, but all in all I can live with the boy racer styling. The speakers are easy to install (using a wired set-up) and will stand the test of time, even if pushed to the absolute maximum.
Summary: A fine pair of precise sounding speakers suited to most vehicles and drivers.
