Sony XS L154P5B
Advantages: Big, noisy, will get attention on the road.
Disadvantages: No sound definition and overall quality is very poor.
My first experience into the car audio scene began by buying a pair of Sony XS L154P5B capless subwoofers in a double enclosure. Anyone would be forgiven for thinking bigger is better and that the larger the subwoofer is, the better sound quality it offers. At first you will still believe this is true because compared to your factory-fitted system it will offer a lot more bang! Unfortunately you will realise the truth when you listen to almost any other after market subwoofer in a friends' car. The first thing you will really notice is the sound quality. Subs are there to give deep and rich bass and the larger Sony Xplod range is a real let down in this category. Put simply, I am now far happier with 8" subs offering far tighter and more defined bass.
This 15" sub sounds awful in hindsight. Due to the sheer size of the sub itself the bass is slow and 'blurry' offering very little definition and precision. As the sub is so large it takes a lot longer to move and therefore it is slower at giving the desired sound. Yes, it will appeal to some people, especially those looking to get their first system in their car. Personally I much prefer sound quality rather than pure noise. When it comes to giving off a lot of noise and nothing else the Sony Xplod range is perfect for this, but that isn't what car audio is about in my opinion. If you are looking to stand out and have your car giving off a real thud from the boot then this sub would appeal to you.
The Sony XS L154P5B is very heavy due to its mass, and the cone looks well made. That said, there are many more better designed subs about and on the face of it this Sony hasn't got the looks that come with most similarly priced subs on the market. The cone is polypropylene and has gold-plated binding posts. It will also require a powerful amp to get the 'best' out of it.
This sub will attract young drivers in particular and due to its 1500W peak power and 450W RMS it will appear to be very powerful (and therefore better) than the less brash subs about. Unfortunately power isn't anything and most people will learn the hard way with this sub from Sony.
Summary: Will always be on the shopping list of young drivers, but offers little benefit to ones' ears.
