Advantages: nice sound, high power, D-Bass.

Disadvantages: aesthetics, could do with more sound features.

Sony's new head units are all very similar this year. The 4000 is a nice entry level CD tuner, and with a whopping 4*50watts output produces a solid sound, which added together with Sony's deafening D-Bass will complement any car stereo setup. In terms of looks, this unit isn't exactly a looker, but pretty much all of the Sony's look the same at the moment, and anyway, it's the sound you are after....right? If you are looking to build a large, amplified system, then you should probably look towards the 5000 model, as it has 2 pre outs for amps, and is still reasonable value. Back to the 4000, it has all the normal features, eg. RDS, PTY, 30 presets, so it is a solid unit. It has a nice layout, which makes it very easy to use when driving, which is always a bonus.

I agree with Flying Dutchman, the CDX-4000R is excellent value, and hooked up to decent speakers (Sony, Infinity, etc) the sound is second to none. Particular features that I like are the fact that it'll play CD-R's & also displays CD Text, which is great as I burn a lot of my own CD's to use in the car. I got mine for only £90.00 plus VAT at Makro...
