I upgraded to this head unit from the older model which was extremely good but after a while the tuner stopped working.
There is very little change between the old and new model apart from the front panel colour system.
I think I have been unlucky with this product or at least hope so:
Neither the old nor new models have any CD memory so if you go over even a relatively small bump the CD stops playing for a couple of seconds. This is annoying. Hoever my new model skips when going round sharp corners and most roundabouts - this is extremely annoying and a bit of a joke (and yest the CD's are clean).
The set up menu is also not that intuitive for instance the Aux-in option is there sometimes to turn on/off but not there other times. It is just not that simple.
The tuner is also terrible in the m8800 it picks up very few stations.
On the plus side the sound is very good, like its predecessor, it has an aux-in and is relatively sheap.
this head unit is a work of art. after my kenwood head unit stop working i was shopping for a new cd player. i found the sony cdmx8800 and new it was the best head unit for me. the 4x52watts channels run standard sound systems with brilliant clarity and the 3 pre out channels allows it to run big sound systems.
some of the great features on this head unit include:-
dso - this feature allow you to raise the sound of your door speakers so they can be heard easier. this allows for an all round better sound quality.
movies & screensavers - when the head unit is closed you can choose to have screensavers or movies play while you listen to music.
graphic equalizer - this allows you to adjust how loud each seperate frequency of sound is i.e. you can adjust the bass, midrange and highrange seperately on a panel like this:
-- - -
- -- -
--- if you know what i mean.
the main disadvantage with this head unit is the fact that you cannot remove the front panel when you leave the car. they have tried to get round this by putting a security code on the unit so if you do not know the code you cannot use the headunit.
i was also disappointed that the headunit did not have a wider range of light colours.
the head unit is very simple to use and install and the manual has everything you could ever need to know about the unit.
all and all i would strongly advise people who have big sound systems in their car to go for this unit and if you dont, buy it anyway people it will improve the sound of your standard speakers dramatically.
