Autoglym Super Resin Polish
Advantages: Extremely effective: excellent protection against further ageing.
Disadvantages: Cannot use too frequently.
Most of us live in areas where the air quality, although better than it used to be, is not perfect. Pollutants in the air, as well as being harmful to us, can attack our car's exterior finish causing ageing and dulling of the paint. Ultraviolet light, from the sun, can also have a seriously detrimental effect on the car's paintwork.
Dust and dirt can also become ingrained in the paint's surface, again dulling the finish and making the car, even straight after washing, look tired.
If your car is in this state, then what's needed is something to restore the paintwork, and something to protect the paint from future damage.
Fortunately, Autoglym's Super Resin Polish has been designed to perform both of these tasks in one handy bottle!
The polish works to remove the surface layer of paint and grime to reveal the pristine paint below. The low molecular weight resins in the polish then bond to the paint, forming a hard protective layer. This layer prevents attack by UV light and pollutants, as well as resisting airborne particles adhering to the paintwork. The most obvious effect, however, is that the resins impart a deep, lustrous, shine to the paintwork.
Super Resin Polish is supplied in 325ml or 500ml bottles. The product is a thin white cream, with a petroleum distillate base. Before polishing, the car should be clean and dry. The polish is applied to a good quality cleaning cloth (these are now reasonably cheap; there's no point in using an 'old rag' due to the chance of scratching what you're trying to protect).
The cleaning cloth is then used to polish the paintwork in large circular sweeping motions. The Super Resin Polish will dry to a white powder in seconds so it's easy to see which parts have been covered.
Once the car (or an area of the car if doing the polishing in sections) has been covered with polish, it can be removed with another cleaning cloth to reveal the deep shine underneath.
Don't be tempted to polish your car on a hot, sunny day. The petroleum base will evaporate very quickly and the polish will be baked onto the paint. This is removable, but it takes a lot more effort to do.
Autoglym Super Resin Polish is a superb product. It has been on the market for many years and remains unchanged, and to a large extent unchallenged. It must, however, be used with caution.
Super Resin Polish is a mild abrasive (this is necessary in order to remove the upper layer of paint ingrained with dirt to give a fresh paint layer). Frequent use of this product will, however, remove the complete upper layer of paint (the strongest) leaving the rest of the paint vulnerable to damage.
For this reason, Super Resin Polish should be reserved for a six monthly valeting, with a milder polish used, if required, between these times.
As a mild abrasive, Super Resin Polish can also be used in place of 'T-Cut', to remove small scratches from the car's paintwork. A lot of elbow grease is needed to use it for this purpose, but it is safer than using T-Cut itself as you're less likely to take off too much paint.
In summary then, if your car's paintwork is looking a little old and tired, a good application of Autoglym Super Resin Polish will have it looking fresh and new in no time. Just don't be tempted to use it too frequently. Highly recommended.
The 500ml bottle is available from Halfords for £10.99.
