Advantages: Superb polish

Disadvantages: Not a lot!

After your house the most expensive purchase that most people will make in their lifetime is their car, so it makes sense to do your utmost to keep it in good condition for as long as possible. If you're the sort of person who keeps their car for donkey's years, or even if you're the type that trades it in every couple of years for a new model, it makes sense to keep your car in good nick and looking well. Apart from the pleasure it'll give you driving around in a motor that looks great, it will enhance the sale price you'll get when it comes time to either sell it or trade it in.

The part of our car that is most exposed to the elements is obviously the paintwork. In our often wet and damp Northern Europe climate our car's bodywork has to put up with a lot of hard wear and tear from the elements. So a good wax polish should be an absolute essential piece of kit in every motorist's tool box to give your cars' paintwork the best possible defence.

One of the polishes that I use on a regular basis is Autoglym, or to be more precise "Autoglym Ultra Deep Shine". It's produced by a UK company based in Letchworth in England along with a whole host of other car polishes, waxes, and car care products.

Autoglym Ultra Deep Shine comes in a 500ml plastic bottle. One of the first things you'll notice when you look at it on the shelves of your car accessory shop is that it has a Royal Charter both from the Queen and from The Prince of Wales. If you pick up the bottle and look at the back you'll see that it's also endorsed by prestige car manufacturers like Aston Martin, Jaguar, and McLaren. High praise indeed and this in itself is enough to tell you that you're looking at a top quality product.

However the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and it's not until you actually use the product that you can be sure it will live up to its claims and high reputation. Have no fear; Autoglym Ultra Deep Shine is one of the very best car polishes I have ever used, and once you apply it to your car you can be assured that your paintwork will stay in pristine condition for a lengthy period.

Autoglym have an extensive range of different polishes for different types of purposes, and this polish is recommended for use on new (or fairly newish) cars where the paintwork hasn't deteriorated or faded too badly. It's also particularly good for dark colours. Currently, my own car is a BMW 530D finished in dark grey metallic paintwork, and even though it's a few years old once it's given the once over with this polish it really does look as though it's just come out of the new car showroom.

You apply it in the same way you apply any other car polish. First make sure the car has had a good wash, and either wait for it to drip dry or dry it off using a good quality chamois leather. Then simply apply your polish with a damp cloth, wait for it to dry to a haze, and buff it up using a soft, clean dry cloth.

Ultra Deep Shine goes on very easily and comes off with equal ease, so you don't have to spend ages or have muscles like Arnold Schwarzenegger to do a good job. I can easily finish my own car in about 20 minutes to half an hour. It really does live up to its promises, and not only makes your car look a million dollars but also masks and removes any small blemishes, scratches or whirl marks that you might have picked up over the years running your car through those dreadful automatic car washes.

Its beading qualities in rain are superb, and the water will run off your car's paintwork like a virtual Niagara Falls. Light mud splashes can easily be wiped off between washes using a chamois leather, which means you don't have to be washing your car so often as in the past.

There's no list of ingredients on the back of the bottle, but I'd be 100% sure that it contains a high percentage of Carnuba wax. Most top end polishes contain this wax which can only be obtained from the leaves of the Carnuba palm in regions of Brazil and which is renowned for giving your car the hardest, deepest and longest lasting wax finish possible.

The bottle I buy is 500ml, and costs me around Euro12.50 in my local car accessory shop. The usual price is just over the £10 mark, but as usual shop around for the best price available. It's freely available both on the Web and in nearly all good car accessory shops.

By the way, Autoglym also have a new wax on the market called "Autoglym High Definition Wax For the Ultimate Finish". Supposedly it's even *BETTER* than their Ultra Deep Shine, and at a whopping £30 for a small tub of wax it would want to be! But I haven't tried it out yet. (Review to follow)

Autoglym Ultra Deep Shine comes with my highest possible recommendation.
