Halfords Night Before Deicer
Advantages: I didn't pay for it!
Disadvantages: doesn't work
It may seem a strange time of year to be writing a review for a de icer, the last thing we want to be thinking about are icy cold nights! However, having used this all last winter I really think it deserves a warning before next winter rolls around and maybe it's just me but winters seem to be coming in quicker and colder each year!
What Is It?
Well, the idea behind it is fantastic. Mornings are a rush for most people, especially cold winter mornings where your bed just seems so much more inviting then the cold air outside. Then, after you've got yourself ready, you're faced with the sometimes mammoth task of scraping off a load of snow and ice. Taking up precious minutes out of your morning and turning you into something vaguely resembling an ice statue in the process!
This product is designed to combat that whole problem. You simply spray on your car windows at night and in the morning your car is ice free. Wonderful, you think, why was this not invented earlier?
What Do Halfords Say?
According to Halfords, this works down to -25C. It was originally designed for use by the Army when they were working in Arctic conditions. It works by preventing ice sticking to your windscreen - there's the important point to note. It doesn't claim to prevent ice forming, merely prevent it sticking.
I got this as a present (strange present I know but I was grateful none the less). So, I thought great, this is going to be the solution to all my problems in the morning and hopefully mean my fingers don't drop off through frostbite in the mornings! I let my car cool down (it doesn't say you should but I thought it might work better) and then sprayed a thin layer over my windows. The pump spray works easily and the spray releases a thin, clear, almost jelly like substance that sticks to your windows and covers them with a thin layer. There, that should be it and in the morning all I need do is turn my wipers on and wipe any ice that had formed off the side windows; problem solved! How wrong could I be?
The following morning I went outside and saw my car covered in ice. No surprise there I thought, it had been cold enough to form ice and as I previously stated this doesn't claim to prevent ice forming. Not a problem though, I should just be able to turn my wipers on and wipe off the ice. So, I got in the car, turned the ignition on and turned on my wipers.. nothing, they were frozen! Not a great start. Oh well, maybe it had worked on the side windows. I went back inside and got a clean cloth to try and wipe off the ice.. nope, still wouldn't budge. I resorted to the old fashioned way of de-icer and a good scraper. I should probably add here that the scraper was needed as the ice was firmly stuck to my windscreen which just confirmed to me that the night before de-icer had done absolutely nothing.
The following day I tried again thinking that maybe I hadn't sprayed enough on or maybe it had just slid off before the ice stuck so this time I sprayed on a fairly thick layer just before going to bed at around 11PM thinking the thicker layer should solve it if it was a problem of not enough product and the time should solve the problem if it was sliding off before ice formed.
The following morning I went out with slightly less expectations then I'd had the morning before but still willing to give it the benefit of the doubt but again I had to resort to de icer and a scraper. The ice, yet again had stuck firmly to my windows.
Price, Availability And Recommendation
This is a Halfords product and as such only available from them. It costs £2.99 for a 500ml bottle but since it appeared to do absolutely nothing to prevent ice sticking to my windows I really am not recommending it.
Now it does claim that heavy rain or rapid thaw after application will reduce it's effectiveness but it didn't rain or thaw after I'd applied it. Quite why a thaw would reduce it's effectiveness anyway I'll never know as there's no need to prevent ice sticking if the ice has thawed anyway! Save your money, do it the old fashioned way and invest in a de icer that actually works.
This is a shame really since usually I think of Halfords as a name I can trust, not in this case.
Summary: Save your money - invest in a product that works
