My car doesn't have an alarm so when I moved to a slightly dodgy postcode, my dad bought me this - just in case. I think it came from Halfords and cost about £44 but he saved 10% by preordering it online. Don't know if they still do that but it is worth a check.
It is basicallsy a very heavy bright yellow thing made of plastic and (I assume) filled mostly with cement (to make it heavy). It has an equally heavy metal section on the end (black bit in the picture) and this has a set of prongs which go around your steering wheel, locking this contraption on to it. I think this stops crime because it is hard to break and it takes up a lot of space so it would be hard to drive anywhere with it on. It also is bright yellow so it is obvious if someone was drinving a car they had stolen with it still on.
I put it on my car everyday outside my house and it gives me a little piece of mind but I dont really like using it. Basically, I know that the one day I don't use it, my car will get stolen and it will be all my fault and my dad will not sympathise with me. (quite fair really!)
I find that it is quite hard to put on and it was very difficult o get used to ue to the size and weight to start with. It is also quite hard to clip it around my steering wheel and as the key has to be turned while it is clicked in in order to lock it (it isnt like a padlock), i have often had to resort to using my teeth to turn the key because one hand of mine simply isn't strong enough to hold the clasp thing shut. My boyfriend has no problem with this however so it might just be me being a bit girly and weak.
I also find that this lock takes up a lot of room in my car and it is hard to put it on without completely bashing the mirror, gearstick, dash, speedo, window, my head, my legs, the seat etc. I know it is meant to do this but everytime I put it on i have to properly slide my seat back and i have quite bashed my cars interior because there is not a lot of room for manouverability.
One good thing for forgetful people like me, this lock comes with two keys. One bad thing, when you lose both keys like I did once, there is no way to get a new one, you just have to buy a new lock, and at over £40, these bad boys ain't cheap. The keys are really small though so don't get in the way on your keyring and they are specific to the lock, so you can't just borrow a friends (I tried!) but obviously if you could do this, it would be useless.
Overall I would say me and the stoplock are resistant friends, I am getting more used to it, and it is getting more used to me bashing it around. As long as it protects me, and my car, then I am happy and willing to put up with its flaws. I have never tried any similar products as I have heard that this is the best out there, I just wish it was easier to put on and you could do it with 2 hands with ease without beng a big strong person.
