Advantages: Low price, Confidence-inspiring in wet and dry
Disadvantages: Possibly not very hard wearing
I purchased a set of four Toyo Proxes T1-Rs for my Mk1 MR2 on the recommendation of various other MR2 owners.
For a budget tyre they really are very impressive, especially in comparison the the cheap plastic tyres I had fitted before. They are very progressive in the dry, both under braking and hard cornering, and inspire huge confidence in the wet with a very predictable feel and surprising levels of grip before they eventually breakaway. They do have quite flexible sidewalls, so I keep the tyre pressures topped up and this seems to bombat it pretty effectively, and I think they are a fairly soft compound so I don't imagine they will last especially long - I imagine if you are looking for a budget tyre for track use it would be best to look for something that has a slightly more durable compound. Having said that, though, for fast road use and maybe the occasional track outing I can't recommend them enough, especially given their low price.
Bear in mind that I can't really comment on road-noise in a twenty year old car with the engine a foot behind me - I can't hear them above the racket though, and they give pretty good economy on motorways compared to some others I have used.
Summary: Excellent tyre for the money with predictable and confidence-inspiring characteristics

- 08/03/09 A set of four tyres size 195/50/15 can be bought from Ebay for around £150 delivered. Obviously prices vary depending on sizes though. |
