Advantages: Funny and revealing!
Disadvantages: Not good for singletons or for gay couples
I received this game as a gift for my birthday at the start of the year but haven't had the chance to play it until recently. The reason for this is; the game is designed to be played in couples but it does suggest that friends who know each other inside out can play as a pair. Consequently me and my girlfriend had a gathering of friends of which consisted of 2 couples + us and one singleton. After a BBQ and some very alcoholic punch and cocktails we decided to play a game. I brought this game out as I have wanted to play it for a while but was waiting for the right opportunity.
The premise of the game is to get one half of a couple to answer a question from the cards supplied and their other half have to guess their answer. This is very similar to the Mr & Mrs show on ITV1. It is relatively simple to play and with the help of alcohol can get people to answer more truthfully and as you can guess squabbling ensues when couples answers don't match.
The game comes in a small box made out of the cardboard they use for most board games and the top half slides off the bottom. The top of the box is pink and the sides and bottom are black. On the back is a short synopsis of the game and a contents list which is as follows: Knowing Me Knowing You Cards, Rules Booklet, Answer Pad, Die, 2 Pencils. For some reason it misses out a Sand Timer which is included in the game but not really needed or mentioned in the rules. We presumed it was to time people giving an answer to a question as some of them caught people off guard. These are all neatly stored inside of the box in a piece of black vacuum-formed plastic.
To play the game you are supposed to pair up and sit boy next to girl, then boy and so on. Couples shouldn't sit next to each other to stop cheating. The cards come in two colours blue and pink 25 of each, with certain questions for each gender depending on the colour. Separate the cards into the two groups blue and pink and shuffle each deck. Each player takes an answer sheet from the pad and a pencil or pen to write with. The youngest female player goes first and rolls the die to determine which category of question will be asked on the card, which she takes from the top of the pink pile.
If she rolls a 1 or 2 the question is a revelation which requires a Yes or No answer. A revelation is worth 1point if partners match answers. For example: Have you ever cheated on a partner?
If a 3 or 4 is rolled the questions a Quandary which is a multiple choice question. Quandaries are worth 2points for matching answers. E.g. If you knew that your partner wasn't ready to have a child but you were desperate to get pregnant would you: a) 'forget' to take your contraceptive pill? b) wait until he's ready to start a family? c) leave him?
Finally, if a 5 or 6 is rolled an intimate question must be asked that requires you to have in depth knowledge of your partner. An intimate question is worth 3points for a match. For example: What habit would you most like your partner to give up?
Once the question has been read out all female players must write down their answer to the question including the person who read out the question. Whilst the females are answering the question all the males need to write down the answer they think their respective partners would give. Once the sand timer has run out the partner of the person who read out the question has to read out their answer to the whole group and she then will give her answer. Then it is the next couples turn with the male reading his answer out first and so on until all the couples have answered and scores are awarded. The card is discarded and the player to the youngest females left takes the die and starts the next round with a question from a blue card being read out. This continues until a predetermined number of questions have been read out by each person. This is entirely up to the people playing the game.
With one spare in our company, so she wasn't singled out, we made her master of ceremony and she asked all the questions and we took it in turns reading out our answers this worked just as well. This is the good thing about this game you can alter the rules to suit the company you are in. This game is quite biased towards straight couples as you can guess with the whole blue and pink card gender divided questions. You could probably alter it so that a gay couple could join in but this would need careful choosing of questions. Another thought, you could turn it into a drinking game so that every time a couple didn't match an answer they could drink a shot or something to that degree.
We all enjoyed this game and with the alcoholic punch and cocktails in us we all seemed to open up and give some insightful answers that had us all laughing. The little squabbles that resulted when couples didn't match answers also gave us some good laughs. The one that particularly stands out in my memory was a question about a nudist beach.
I think this is a great game for a party but needs alcohol involved to get people answering more truthfully. There are so many different ways you could play this game, that it could be played many times before it gets boring. Overall the game works well as it is and adds a good twist to an evening with friends.
You can purchase this game for as little as £5.25 from amazon.co.uk and considering the entertainment value and the fact that you can play this game in a number of different ways make this game an excellent addition to any party.
Summary: A good game for a party with couple friends.
