Advantages: Takes up very little room, no small parts to lose

Disadvantages: Too complicated for the under eights without a bit of help

Lexicon was first marketed in 1930 by Waddingtons toys. Its changed remarkably little since then. Its a based upon a very simple concept and theres not much that really could be changed. Its very simplicity makes it an easy game for both children and adults to play and it takes up very little space making it a great game to play on trains and ferries as well as at home.

Lexicon is a card game with a difference, instead of numbers each card features a single letter with a points value similar. The pack measures 12cm x 9cm x 2cm. It contains a deck of Lexicon cards, a pad of tear off single use score cards and the instructions for three different games that can all be played with the Lexicon cards.

The games are:

Master Lexicon

A word game. Take turns to spell words with the cards in your hand or add letters to an opponents word to make it into a longer word without repositioning any cards. First to get rid of all their cards or reach 100 points wins. Simple enough for a six year old to join in with a little help.

Lexicon Cris-Cross

The aim of which is to form as many words as possible from 25 letters arranged in a crossword grid. This proved incredibly difficult in reality and far too complicated for either of our children to grasp.

Lexicon Riddance

Each player is dealt seven cards. In order to get rid of your cards as quickly as possible you need to make words using a leter from the deck and at least two of the seven that you are dealt. First to use up all their cards wins.

All three games were fun to play although Lexicon Cris-Cross is more fun with adults. Its proved to be a fun way to help our children with their spellings and to introduce them to new words.

Its available in WH Smiths for £4.99 but can be bought for considerably less from Amazon.

Summary: Three games for the price of one
