Mille Bornes ... bolstered by an extra tank of gas, when suddenly your opponent cuts you off with a flat-tire card. You slam to a halt, sidelined until you draw a spare tire. It's a 1,000-mile race along an imaginary road; your goal is to arrive first, avoiding the hazards--flat tires, accidents, empty gas tanks--while inflicting them on your opponents and collecting the spares and repairs that will speed you on. The absorbing Mille Bornes (French for 1,000 milestones and pronounced "meel born") has easy-to-follow rules of the road: green means go; red means stop; obey the speed limit at all times. Here's an old card game that I remember from my childhood (and that's a long time ago, since I just turned 50) that my family still loves to play. It is called Mille Bornes, which is French for "1000 miles" (okay, so they still haven't gone metric, but who cares) and it is seductively simple to learn, and totally fun to play. The object of each hand is to be the first person to put down mileage cards that add up to exactly 1000 miles. There is a shorter version for playing with only two players where the first person to reach 700 miles can either end the game or continue on to 1000 miles.
