Advantages: Makes It Easier To Shift Money Around At Cards
Disadvantages: Can Lead To Nonchalance & Unwise Risk Taking
Poker chips are used as a substitute for real cash in a game of poker that is played for cash.
However, in tournament play the chips will represent a nominal amount of money that each person starts the game with. The amount will usually not represent the amount of cash that a player has bought into the tournament for but will instead be an amount that facilitates the play in the game being interesting and lasting for long enough providing the opportunity for patience and skill to be factors in the eventual outcome.
Think of poker chips in tournament play being similar to the pretend money in the popular board game "Monopoly". In Monopoly the money is not real but whichever player ends up with all of the money is the winner.
It is the same in tournament poker.
Poker chip sets will contain chips of various values. These will usually range from $1 right up to $1000 at regular increments of value. You can buy chip sets with specific values and increments of values on them if you wish.
Usually the values will be expressed in dollars because poker is a card game of American origin but other currencies or no currency notation at all are available.
Chips have been around for a long time in use in casinos for use in games like Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat and Craps.
Chips are usually small, round, colourful discs and about the size of a U.K. £2 coin.
There are two main reasons why chips are used in casinos instead of cash. Firstly they are easier to move around and count for players and casino dealers and secondly it makes it more likely that players will be reckless when gambling.
This is because it is easier psychologically to gamble high value chips, which may almost not seem like real money, than it would be to gamble with wads of real notes.
If you are going to play some home game poker then buying a set of poker chips will make it easier and more fun to play.
