Advantages: kids enjoy naming categories
Disadvantages: button cell batteries in timer
The Crazy Frog drove UK TV viewers crazy with his annoying advert for mobile phone ring tones in 2005. Not only did the remix of Axel F to the sound of a moped get stuck in everyone's head but the regulators were inundated with complaints about the fact that the frog's tiny amphibian penis was on display, no wonder he is known as the annoying thing. While parents hated the crazy frog, kids loved him and one of the many products cashing in on his popularity was "The Annoying Thing Game" which is not as annoying as you might imagine.
The game comes in a handy carry pouch which means that things pieces will not get lost. Inside the pouch is a crazy frog timer, a dice and playing cards. The rules are simple you roll the dice and whatever number comes up you have to list this number of things from as many cards as possible while the timer runs. You keep all cards where you name the objects correctly within the time allowed, any you don't manage go to an opponent. The winner at the end of the game is the one with most cards.
Each card has three things listed on it. You decide before you play the game if you go for easy, medium or hard so it makes it easy to play with different age and ability groups this way. The categories included are things that crawl, things you say on a first date, things you plug in and children's TV shows. There are 75 cards giving a total of 335 categories to play with, this means there is quite a bit of repetition after you have played the game several times but kids like that. The favourite category is "things you find in a nudist camp" which always provokes lots of laughs as you try to name objects without naming rude body parts!
The timer plays the Axel F theme sung by the crazy frog and runs for around 30 seconds allowing you to work through several cards in this time. The timer is not as annoying as you might imagine as it quickly becomes background noise that you largely ignore. The annoying thing about it is the fact that it takes button cell batteries instead of AA but luckily they don't need to be replaced very often.
I like the Annoying Thing game, it is a fast paced game which gets kids brains working as they work out what things goes in each category. The fact that the rules are simple and many of the categories easy for kids means it is suitable for kids from around 7 years upwards, my daughter got bored of it when she was 11 I think but it was a firm favourite before then. Available for around £10 from good toyshops this is a good value toy which will provide hours of enjoyment.
Summary: a good game for age 7+
