Advantages: fun

Disadvantages: stale-mate

Top Trumps is a card game for two or more players. Each set is based around a certain topic, such as fast cars. Each card contains a different item in that category (e.g. different types of sports car). Each card contains numerical data relating to that item (such as top speed, BHP etc). The game is played by two or more players, with the aim being to call out a category which you think you beat other's cards on, and if you do you win their card. If you don't, the winner takes your card and takes over control of which category to call. The winner is the person who ends up with all of the cards.

The thing I like about this game is the fact that it has so many incantations. I remember being a young boy and playing with my dad's version which was made up of American cars from the 70s era. It was so cool to look at the cars, and today you can get sets from all sorts of categories such as Simpsons, Lord of the Rings etc etc. There's the first point - it's fun to choose a topic that you'll personally enjoy.

In terms of game-play, the game can get a little boring if you reach a stale-mate point where you end up with two players who have the same amount of cards left each. It's like 'he wins ten', then 'you win ten'. The cards tend to have certain ones that are so strong that you get a pattern developing and it gets a bit dull.

Price-wise, new sets cost around £6, and can be bought from shops like WH Smiths. This isn't a bad price for a game that is both educational (you learn what's on the cards) and entertaining.

Finally, they're great for taking on journeys, as they take up little space, but if you get sick when reading on a journey, don't bother!

All in all, a fun game that has stood the test of time. The more you get to know your cards the better you get, and it's possible to enjoy it at all ages.

Summary: do it
