We probably have about half a dozen packs of cards in our house as I do tend to buy them a lot when I am on holiday and always find myself thinking that the next time I come away I must remember to put a pack in my suitcase, however I do now have some lovely sets with spectacular views of the country I am visiting at the time. We have two sets of these Waddington No 1 playing cards, one in red and one in blue and they have either bright red or bright blue writing on the front of the pack. I cannot remember exactly how much I paid for them but I wouldn't have paid the full price which is just under £2 and I know they sell them at the pound shops so would more than likely have bought them from there.
These are a standard size pack and contain 52 cards, 13 of each suit and 2 jokers. They have a pattern all over the back of each card and the cards themselves are quite thick and sturdy although they can rip or bend quite easily as they are made of card. They do have a linen feel to them so when you are holding them you never feel as though they are going to slip out of your fingers. Although they do have a linen feel they are also quite shiny and although I have never had cause to do it, I would think that they could be wiped clean of any sticky fingermarks quite easily, although you couldn't really get them wet.
The number on the cards and the suit are quite large and bold unlike some other cheaper cards I have had where it is not obvious at a glance to me what the card is, however those with perfect eyesight probably wouldn't have this problem. I think that the price you pay for a pack of cards is a very cheap way of entertainment and they are suitable for all ages. When my children were younger a favourite game was the very simple 'pairs' where you turned all the cards face down and took it in turns to turn two cards over and when they matched you won them. My children got to be very good at remembering where the cards were and I soon stopped 'letting' them win as they did this without any help from me! I play this game now with my nieces and nephews and they love it and it is guaranteed to keep them quiet for quite some time.
I love playing solitaire and will often have a quick game as I find it very relaxing, although I don't usually only have one game unless I win first time. My husband has also recently been trying to teach me how to play poker but this is in the very early stages and I don't really know what I am doing, but I will persevere with it as I find this game fascinating and apparently I do have a very good poker face!
I think that a pack of cards are very versatile and good value to have and we definitely get our use out of them in our house. I think that children like them as they are quite a grown up toy and adults like them as you can play so many different games with them. These Waddington No 1 are probably one of the most well known brands of cards as you do see them for sale everywhere. They are definitely recommended by me and I think every house should have some as they are timeless, will never go out of fashion and are great fun.
Playing cards have always been part of my life. From childhood I remember playing Snap, Go Fish, Pontoon and various other card games with my sisters. Now that I have a family of my own cards are still important, whether we are playing games in the tent on rainy camping holiday or having an impromptu poker tournament with my teenage children in the evening.
I currently have a couple of packs of theses Waddington Number 1 Playing Cards. One of the packs (red) is a little battered but still complete and the other (dark blue) is still wrapped in its plastic packaging awaiting use over the Christmas period.
I feel these are the best quality playing cards for general family use. The cards are nice and smooth and the graphics are clear, the picture cards are bright and attractive. The cards feel slightly textured and have a waxy plastic finish. When the cards first come out the pack they are tightly packed but not stuck together. The cards are stored in the cardboard box which after a while starts to look a bit bashed but still keeps the cards safe when not in use.
The cards are easy to shuffle and handle. The edges are smooth and the card that the cards are made of is of a good thickness. The cards have just enough flex in them without them bending easily.
My son likes to use these cards for card tricks and he finds the finish of the cards allows him to manoeuvre the cards quickly and smoothly. My daughter likes to build pyramids with the cards, the cards balance nicely on each other and she can make a good sized pyramid till the dog runs through it. My Husband and I play some quite heated card games with these cards and I have to admit to throwing the cards around in frustration but happily the cards have withstood this.
All things considered Waddington Number 1 Cards are the best quality and value for money and are the only ones I will buy.
The cards can be brought on Amazon UK for less than £2 a pack so are good value and a great ad on item when doing some shopping.
Thank you for reading.
When we moved in to our own home a couple of years ago we resolved to build up a collection of board games and other items. Now unfortunately poker playing took over our circle of friends and as such we only own about 5 board games, a set of dominos and lots of poker playing equipment. This is something that I aim to improve on with Christmas rapidly approaching, however, poker playing is something that we enjoy and we often play for money. When we are playing for money with friends I tend to use a brand new deck of cards and our card shuffler to play with. This is because I don't want any claims of cheating or card rigging when people get beaten fair and square. This means that I buy a new deck of cards perhaps once a month. I normally just add a packet in with my Amazon order which means I pay somewhere between £1.00 and £1.50 depending on when I buy them. This might seem wasteful but I tend to keep a couple of the now 'used' decks for normal card games and then every so often I list a couple of decks on Freecycle and they go off to someone else who wants to use them.
Of course with this deck, like all card decks, there are 4 suits of cards with 13 cards in each suit. 2-10,J,Q,K,A and 2 jokers also. I always discard the jokers and then run the cards through my card shuffler several times. I only tend to use the card shuffler for poker nights where we play for cash, just so everyone can see them being shuffled fairly. These cards come in red and blue and for some reason we nearly always have the red ones. This isn't because I have a preference but instead because Amazon send random ones out.
These cards are a standard size and fit comfortably in my hand. I can hold several cards at once without feeling like I am straining my hand to do so. Because there is a linen finish on this cards they have a glossy appearance and they move fluidly when dealing them out to players. The suit detail and card number is easy to see when holding these cards, even without my glasses, and the cards are a reasonable thickness that no other player can detect any of the detail by looking through the back of the card. These feel like good quality cards and they look good too. Normally by the end of one evening of poker playing they haven't been abused too much however there will always be someone who sits there bending a card after they fold or when they're waiting for their turn to bet. They fare well to bending and general misuse and only start to look a little grubby after a whole evening of playing where beer, crisps, cigarettes and other naughty products are consumed around them. These cards are a nice thickness and feel like quality cards in all. This is why I continue buying them. They shuffle fluidly whether shuffling by hand or in my automatic card shuffler which is a positive too. These, like most playing cards, come in a cardboard box. This box is quite strong, easy to open and comfortably holds all the cards without bursting at the seams. These cards are sealed too when they arrive much like a cigarette packet.
Some of the decks that we keep for other games have probably been used for a good year now. I like to play solitaire, snap with my nieces and nephews and card matching games too with them. These cards are ideal for that as they can withstand the sometimes grubby hands of small children and the numerous occasions where they are bent. They do start to look a little dog eared at the edges after several months of occasional use but for the price that I pay for them I feel that they are fantastic value for money. I will definitely continue to buy these cards new for our poker games in the interest of transparency and to avoid any claims of cheating too. The price of them is not prohibitive and they are long lasting too when used for standard card games.
Waddington's no. 1 Playing Cards
I'm sure anyone and everyone who enjoys a game of cards has at some point owned a deck of these playing cards. As my family and I enjoy playing cards quite regular, it was obvious I was going to have a deck of these cards. They have to be amongst the most popular and most sold playing cards.
As like any deck of playing cards, this deck consists of the usual 52 cards, 4 suits, 13 cards in each of the suits, and 2 jokers. The cards come with either red or blue backs, me being a card freak had to have a set of each colour, I don't know why because they are exactly the same, I guess I just couldn't choose between the two colours.
Quality and durability
These cards are good quality, quite thick with a sort of protective film over them to stop them from becoming grubby too quickly. I've had my cards for quite a while and I don't think the condition of them is too bad, over time they have become slightly dirty and a little grubby but that's to be expected, after all the cards do pass through lots of different hands and are constantly being fiddled with when they are in play. The cardboard boxes they came in are a bit worse for wear these days but they do still remain in one piece.
They can be fun
We have played numerous different card games with these particular cards, it has always fascinated me just how many different games you can actually play with a single deck of cards. There have been many times I have played one player games with these cards as well as lots of games with others. I personally never seem to tire of playing card games. I must have been playing cards since I learned how to count.
To sum up these playing cards
Good quality, not very expensive just a few pounds from your local high street shops or online, something I personally think every household should have as they are great for relieving boredom and can be something fun to do with the kids, instead of them being glued to their latest Xbox or Play-station game.
I personally recommend these cards because for as far back as I can remember I have always had a deck and for me the whole concept of a deck of playing cards is something I won't ever tire of.
Thank you for reading my review which may also appear on other sites.
If you like games as we do in our family a pack of cards around the house is essential. There are so many games you can play with a pack of cards that you will find a game for everyone. Recently we went on holiday with our in laws and after I had put the kiddos to bed we were at a bit of a loss as to what to do until we found a pack of cards in the bag of games and toys we bought. We ended up playing card games all week, gambling for money and having a great time, staying up to 1 or 2 in the morning every night because we were so addicted.
We also play a game of double solitaire in our house. This is just like the regular solitaire game but you play with two or more players and each player needs their own pack of cards so we have to have a few of these packs around the house at all times.
This deck of cards is pretty basic and standard but sometimes that is all you need. Of course, there are more exciting packs of cards such as ones with characters on or souvenir cards that you can buy that has pictures of places like The Grand Canyon etc but they all do the same thing and work the same way. This pack of cards contains 52 cards plus jokers. The back of the card is red and has an all over pattern on it. You can also get this deck of cards in blue too. The cards are made of a very thick card and have a linen finish to them meaning they are protected although as they do not have a plastic covering them over time they will get dirty. They will also bend and tear as well although if you do bend them they will not tear eventually and should last for a while. The trouble is when you do bend these cards they are forever marked. For example, if you play a game where you cannot see the number underneath the card and need it to be a secret if it is bend you will get to know which card it is and could cheat without really knowing it.
The cards are palm sized so they are easy to hold and play with. There are various different brands of packs of cards you can buy but the Waddingtons cards are the ones you see most often in discount stores or toy stores and we have at least 3 or 4 packs of these cards as they are very cheap. At the moment I have found them in our local Poundland for, yep, you've guessed it, £1 so they are well worth picking up a few packs for that impromptu game of cards!
