EASYi USB SD Card Reader
Advantages: Cheap, Small, Effective
Disadvantages: Only reads SD cards
After a stint in Asia doing a bit of travelling I had taken around 6000 pictures, thats 6000 files that needed to be transferred from my SD memory cards (all 12 of them) to my PC. I had read in a 'Travel Photography' guide that it is not advisable to transfer directly from your camera as any loss in power can cause loss of images, which for my was a risk I wasn't willing to take. I got this nifty little card reader from Amazon for around £4, very cheap in my eyes. I have had and been using this reader for around 6 months now
DESIGN, I like the look of the EASYi, it looks like and is a similar size to a standard USB memory stick. It is black in colour and made of plastic. The SD card slot is on the right hand side (as in the picture above) and the transfer indicator light is on the left, this shows when the PC is interacting with the device in any way. Out of the box it comes with a clear plastic protector for the USB end that I lost about a day after I started using it, but i'm like that. There is a small plastic loop at the rear for attaching to keyrings etc. The EASYi only caters for SD and SDHC cards (the same size) so if you are looking for a multi car reader this is not for you.
DAY-TO-DAY, I find this device very pleasant to use, it is very simple after all. It is Plug and Play so no messing around with drivers or other software, it comes up on screen just as any external hard-drive or memory stick would, in the My Computer window. The memory card itself sits very comfortably and firmly in its slot meaning I have never had any trouble with bad connection. Due to its size it is very easy to travel with either in a laptop case or camera bag, you barely notice it's there.
RELIABILITY, To date I have never had any complaints about this device as far as reliability are concerned, no lost files, no connection problems, the light even still flashes to life every time it's plugged in.
IN SUMMARY, This is a great device. It's role is very simple and it does it with great efficiency. Yes it could look more glamourous but really for around £4 I really cannot complain. If you want a device to read your SD/SDHC cards then this is ideal for you...and don't worry all 600 images made it safely to my PC.
Summary: Easy and cheap. DOES THE JOB
