Advantages: Fast transfer of your photos

Disadvantages: None

I picked up one of these as an absolute bargain on ebay a couple of months ago. This is one of the most essential purchases you should make if your digital camera uses SD memory cards for many reasons.

Firstly, if you keep on plugging your digital camera directly into the computer, the transfer of photos is very slow. In comparison, this Kodak card reader transferred 100 photos onto my iMac in under half the time it took to do the same photos direct from my Ricoh GX200 camera.

Secondly, plugging in and unplugging your camera is not good. It can weaken the ports and shorten the life of your camera if you do this a lot. I would much rather knacker a £10 device than a £100 or more camera.

Thirdly, battery life. Many cameras only work on batteries. Those that do work from the main power supply, need an additional spend to get that power adapter. So using a card reader means popping your memory card out of the camera and into this device. It saves your battery for the important part... taking pictures.

The fourth benefit of this particular card reader is brilliant. You get a USB extension cable. So, if your ports are awkwardly around the back of your computer, or under a desk, this solves it. You can leave the card reader permanently plugged in. You can also unplug the main unit and have easy access to another USB port, which again is very handy.

This is a good device and costs so little that it is a no brainer purchase.

Summary: This is a good device and costs so little that it is a no brainer purchase

Luckily my Acer TravelMate has a built-in memory card reader.
