Advantages: A small, easy to use gadget
Disadvantages: It's too basic to have any!
I travel frequently and therefore take a fairly large amount of pictures, but never take my laptop on trips for me to upload my pictures. Instead of carrying around the appropriate leads and risk losing them I gathered I might as well buy an SD card reader to plug into hostel/foreign computers.
I didn't exactly research much into them or shop around, just picked up the MobileMate SD+ from Curry's for about £12, although I'm sure it is cheaper now. It's no bigger than a cigarette lighter, with a loop to attach a lanyard or tie it to your bag, and comes with software and instructions. Why it comes with instructions is beyond me, as it's so simple to use. Simply plug it in to the USB port of a computer after inserting your memory card and the plug-and-play facility lets you upload your pictures immediately. It's so easy that I've even become so lazy as to do that even when I'm at home, forgetting about finding my leads and using the proper software!
I'm taking it around the world with me later this year, to cut down on packing space, and it's universal rather than a singular camera lead which if I lose then I'd be stuck. Also, if this gets lost it's a mere £10(approx) to replace it, which i'm relatively sure would be less and easier than finding the identical lead if that were to go missing.
It certainly isn't a product that will change your life, but if you're on the travel a lot and want to update friends and family back home then the MobileMate has to be recommended for sure ease.
Summary: It stays in my camera case at all times
