Land Rover Freelander 2
by horsespecialist
Review for the Freelander 2 - I bought a Freelander 1 when they first came out, and purchased a 2 as soon as it was available. I find that the 2 compares very favourably against the original incarnation, with much less wallowing around corners and a much more pleasant drive altogether.
The design is excellent and much ... classier and sportier looking than most of the competition. With its flashy good looks even on the basic models this car is well worth a look.
I have an automatic TD4, I find the fuel economy is reasonable on longer journeys, but it does tend to use a fair amount of fuel when doing shorter runs. This, however is the only criticism I have of this model; the recall to replace part of the steering mechanism was dealt with quickly and efficiently by Land Rover so I think it unfair to give the car a minus for that, although the symptoms (droning and loss of power steering going round corners) were quite worrying.
There is plenty of storage in the car, with pockets behind the rear passenger chair and door compartments on each door.
Added to all of the above advantages, the road tax is not as high as other 4 x 4s and the emissions are reasonable too. The carbon emissions are offset too until 57000 miles I think, this gives you a great argument against all those people who will voice their opinion at what a disgrace it is to drive 'one of those 4 x 4s)!
I enjoy driving my Freelander and it copes admirably with the everything I undertake, mainly driving up to horse yards over tractor ruts and gravel. It has 4 settings to cope with snow/ice, gravel, hills etc and hasn't let me down on any of these surfaces. I watched other cars skidding last winter in the terrible snow and ice whilst this car didn't budge. It is obviously more of a road car than a Defender but that doesn't diminish its capabilities.
Overall an excellent 4 x 4 or car, giving plenty of head and legroom for all passengers and a good all round view when driving, even for my little boy in his car seat! Read the complete review |
