Peugeot 206cc
by WeesyKels
I was involved in a car accident two weeks ago, and my own convertible (a Ford Streetka Winter Edition) has been written off. In the meantime, my very generous mother is letting me drive her car, an 03 plate sky blue Peugeot 206cc 1.6. This car is a little bigger than my Streetka, and benefits from an electric roof, larger boot space and ... back seats. The latter however are completely pointless as even my 5 year old neices feet are squashed up against the drivers seat even when it is fully forward!
I find the clutch biting point is way too high and am constantly over revving the vehicle. Also, it is difficult to find the reverse gear without navigating to 4th first (this has been mentioned by other people I know who also drive the same car). Another point, my mother and I are both petite (5ft and 5ft2") and yet our heads are very close to the ceiling. I cannot drive the car with the sun visor down as I am constantly headbutting it which is very irritating.
The exterior from the front looks identical to the standard 206, a little dated now I think. I have driven many other cars, all for many different lengths of time, and have gotten to grips with them easily. The peugeot 206cc however I am still trying to master. It has since been removed from my prospective new car list, and I will consider a more up to date cabriolet. Read the complete review |

Peugeot 206 Quiksilver
by dooyootrp
I have had my Peugeot 206 Quicksilver (1.4 16v 90bph) for about 8 months and it is my first car. Decided to go for this car as it was in very good condition and looks sporty. Has 5 spoke alloy wheels and body coloured bumpers which set it apart from basic models. The notable quicksilver interior is a nice touch, along with metal pedals ... and the front sport seats look really good while remaining quite comfortable. Came with air conditioning, electric windows/mirrors and heated screen. At about 5'10 I find the driving position good with decent view all around the car. The back seats are deprived of legroom but i have had 3 adults in the back without too much trouble. The boot is an okay size with plenty of room for everyday things such as the shopping or in my case, putting your kit bag in.
The 1.4 16v (90bhp) engine is lively and gives great performance in terms of small cars, my dad was the first to drive it and thought it was the 1.6 on first impressions. A sporty drive is what you get with this car and you will be very involved with it. You have to give it high revs to get the most out it but it's very enjoyable to drive, I would say it is one of the best small cars on the market performance wise. The firm suspension is an obvious asset to creating the sort of hot hatch feel you get when driving this car but can be a burden where it's a smooth ride but over speed bumps and around tight corners it will suffer. For me personally this is a minor problem. Its more than comfortable around town, you're in 3rd gear before you know it. Not out of depths on motorways either however, it is noisy at high speeds. Even though I have kept praising the performance don't get me wrong, it's still a 1.4 and you're reminded of this in 5th gear where it's pretty average but still acceptable.
The running costs of the car are not bad with fuel consumption averaging 38mgp, should get 40mgp out of motorway driving pretty easy. Tax and insurance is cheap and as it's a common car parts are reasonable and also easy to get.
Too sum it up it has been a very reliable car for me and fun to drive. They are affordable cars and are not affected highly by depreciation. I would however look for a good condition, well looked after one or you're at risk of having problems if not soon down the road. There are plenty on the market so be choosy. Peugeot 206 GTi
by Graham1984
I brought a 2.0 206 gti 138bhp car as a first car for around a couple of thousand pounds and was surprised at how much my view of them changed from viewing 206's as a load of crap.
The car handles great and gives you great confidence in the corners at speed and is a good fun drive on b roads and is quite pokey for a small ... hatch with a top speed of around 130mph.
The interior is not too bad of a place to be albeit the typical plastic dash you expect with any european car these days the seats are comfy on long drives (500 mile drive in a day was personal confirmation) its got all the basic parts anyone wants with a car nowadays A/C ABS power steering basic CD player with multidisc changers in some and can fit 5 people in comfortably.
Depending on size of driver does impede space for the passenger behind as i am 6ft my seat is practically as far back as possible. The overal drive is good as you can easilly gain speed fast pushing the gears which have a surprising amount of low torque can to boost you along and it has the feel of an indoor gokart, you do get some body roll which can be sorted by buying some strut braces if you wish and the peddles at first feel close together as i have size 11 feet but you seam to get used to that pretty quickly.
The mpg is not bad for the performance you get with the stock car and carefull driving but as with any car it will fall quite rapidly if your right foot starts to get a bit heavy. I found that by changing the standard air filter for a K&N panel filter helped out with the throttle response quite well and it only costs around £35 and compared to the usual boy racer induction kits helped more as your dragging cold air through your original air box system with no engine heat getting in there as i found when i had a pipercross cone it sounded ok but as soon as the engine temp picked up it was laggy to drive.
The only parts i have changed for my car in the year i have owned it is the exhaust from the cat back which was stock for a 3inch one and i had it remapped by superchips for £250 which i highly reccomend as even tho it only gained around 12bhp and 32Nm of torque it generally made the overall drive so much better and sharp and responsive it was worth the outlay plus when you drive in a conservative way your mpg can easilly exceed what it should be possible to do as you can drive in fourth or fifth more often and the car still pulls along nicely plus you can get motorway mpg on general roads which helps keep the cash in your wallet and away from the insane fuel prices and pays for the mod itself over time also if you can stomach it running on premium fuel such as momentum 99 from tescos helps performance and mileage to with the remap.
I found the gear change to be surprisingly long which was a simple fix as there is a company called griffith engineering that sell a quickshift kit for £30 ish and its only a 30min job for a mechanic (if that) that shortens it considerably and helps you get back on the power faster and is a damn site cheaper than paying over £100 at times for something that is generally doing the same thing without having to change all the rods shortening the gearstick etc.
The only other downside i found with this car is that the view from the driving position can be somewhat restrictive as you cant see any of the bonnet and even looking in the rear view mirror it feels the roof restricts what could of been beeter rear visibility but that maybe due to my seat placement, either way the cars the size of a large shoe so that should not effect anyone who is experienced and confident/competent.
Generally its been a great car for me it looks not bad for the price and considering the more boxy looking cars being rolled out today and you dont see too many about like the million ford focus you see driving about, insurance can be reasonable depending on a age and driving history and i will be sad to see it go when that time comes just beware the french reliabillty issue but with general maintenance and a yearly service it can be a cracking car if you dont buy a beat up donkey you may land yourself a small cheap gem.
