Advantages: Lovely Car to Drive, Leather Interior

Disadvantages: Can use the Fuel, Watch the parts costs

I bought a 3 year old high mileage M Reg 164 Lusso back in 1997. The first decent car I'd owned. Before then I'd run a clapped out Mini a Reliant Scimitar (Great Car) and a Golf. The Alfa is Luxury. So far I've only had 2 major problems. The Rear sub frame was found to be corroding badly after a year. This was surprising as the rest of the car showed no signs of corrosion. The subframe appear to have been unpainted when fitted.

Alfa were not too helpful and their main dealer in Edinburgh was dreadful. The upshot was a bill for £136.00 for the parts and £202.00 for labour. Since then I have found a specialist Alfa man and although not cheap he can be trusted.

Other things to watch for are the Lambda Sensor used by the engine management unit for analysing CO2 emisions. That's £92.00 and about £36.00 labour. New Good Spark plug leads are £100.00. A Radiator is £142.00, mine got a stone through it ! Rear Suspension bushes are £25.00 the pair. Front Brake Discs are £118.00 the pair.

To sum up. You can get these cars cheaply now, much to my regret ! BUT be prepared to pay out to keep them in top condition.

Good report & shocked to here about subframe, the car was probably built during a national holiday. "we must remember to rust proof this later, another glass of wine?". if you think dealers are bad, try Marshalls in Camb's, who when I asked for the cost of a 'CAMBELT' change, the receptionist told me "I can't get hold of anyone in service but it's probably £575 + VAT. Customer relations are dead!! please keep us upto date on ownership.

Well-said Robert ! You are right about that Arnold Clark crew calling themselves "Alfa Main agents" in Edinburgh They were crap when they were Renault Main Agents and seem to have the same salesmen, so I think the garage will be the same. Stopped me giving the Alfa 156 serious consideration. Edwin Labinjoh is quite a reasonable guy though as a specialist. Get parts from Alfaholics or EB Spares in Westbury Wiltshire. They are much cheaper.

The 164 is not my favourite of the 'Group 4' cars though. The Saab 9000 seems better. None were as cheap as the Fiat Croma I once owned though. That is my lowest rated DooYoo Premier Opinion (got a crown and about 10 'reads' for it several months ago).

Please keep unpdated nd enjoy your Alfa.

Moistoist. If someone doesn't know what the rear sub frame is they should be taking a friend who does when they go looking at cars ! Thanks for the comment
