The grip on dry Tarmac is phenomenal. Surprisingly, on wet roads it’s nearly as good. The tail will swing out if provoked but not through a lack of adhesion. WI am pressed to think of another car with such tenacious road-holding on dodgy surfaces, while the steering and anti-lock brakes get top marks.


The marvellous chassis is complemented superbly by the 335bhp24-valve supercharged straight-six engine. The DB certainly sounds like it means business, but when it came to obtaining our standing start acceleration times I had a little difficulty because the DB7 seems to have so much grip that its rear wheels won’t spin. As a result, severe axle tramp hampered hard acceleration at the track. In addition to a gruff straight-six growl there’s a slightly menacing whining from the blower which increases in pitch and ferocity as the engine speed rises.


Thick carpet and warm-smelling Connolly hide make the interior a delightful place and even the Ford switchgear seems to blend in OK. In the back seats things are pretty cramped, just as in every DB Aston. A couple of kids will fit in but they might not like it because the front seat backs rise so high that forward vision would be totally obscured.
