Advantages: Classy, comfortable, spacious and fun
Disadvantages: Top-end models are expensive, no beauty
The Audi A3 is the spiritual successor to the Golf. The Audi badge has all the right upmarket connotations, though its price might put a few people off. It’s no out-and-out beauty either, but its stocky, rounded looks work. The 1.6-litre version offers 99bhp, but the 1.8, five-valve-per-cylinder version is more eager to play. There’s plenty of power low down, but it does its best work from 4,000rpm; after that it stays smooth all the way to the red line. The gear change is excellent too; the gear lever as slick and quick as you’ll ever need. It gives a firm but comfy ride and the steering is a big improvement over the vague feel of the Audi A4. If you’re going to be stuck in traffic then the Audi is the place to be. Not only is the seat height adjustable, but the steering wheel is adjustable for reach and rake. The seats are well-bolstered, providing loads of support, especially at the base of your back. The dash is clear but stylishly curvy. Getting into the back is easy, thanks to the front seat which moves completely out of the way, and once in there two average-sized adults should feel pretty comfortable, despite the limited leg room. There’s a decent-sized boot too, so luggage will fit without too many problems. The top-of-the-range A3 is the best hot hatch on the block. Our advice is to beg, borrow or steal the extra cash to buy one.
