Advantages: Refinement Practicality
Disadvantages: 2.5TDi lacks oomph
If you're looking for a big estate car with excellent equipment and a badge to match then look no further than the A6 Avant Quattro. We have had an A6 Avant 2.5TDi Quattro Sport (as a company car) for nearly a year now and it has to be one of the most practical and comfortable cars we have ever owned. It's a big car outside (and inside) with more than enough room for two adults, two young children and all the associated things that go with them. The car is full of "nice touches" that go with the prestige end of the market - things like damped pop-out rear coat hooks (I kid you not), storage pockets and cupboards everywhere and individual digital temperature control for passenger and driver. Performance (on the TDi) could be better (by having a different engine), but the Quattro is superb. We recently arrived at an outdoor show after three days solid rain. The parking field was a quagmire and when trying to leave EVERYONE was getting stuck and being pushed by organisers or towed out by tractors - the A6 however simply cruised past dozens of stuck vehicles, much to the admiration of many othe people there! Handling is pretty good - It doesn't really have sports suspension, but it cruises very well and is surefooted with the Quattro drive. The TDi isn't that economical (typ. 28-30mpg) - it is a big car, but it depends how you drive it and the type of journey. However once you are moving you generally won't notice it's a diesel apart from the slight lack of acceleration compared with petrol models. I'd definately recommend one to anyone who needs space and refinement in a top marque package. However I'd probably check out the 2.8 or 2.7 twin-turbo petrol engined Quattro's for better performance.
