Advantages: Control, Speed, Looks
Disadvantages: Recurring repairs, Convertible top cover is hard to store, Winter tires are needed for cold weather climates
Sales people are always looking for repeat customers. So, the real proof of a car's value is in the answer to the question -- Would you buy another Audi TT Roadster? Before I answer that question, let me give you the "Ben Franklin" approach, the pluses and the minuses associated with my experience. The Facts It's red, but not gaudy red. It's a 2001 model, purchased in July, 2000. It has the top-of-the-line sound system. Cost: $45K American dollars. Miles driven – 43,000. It's still under warranty. The Pluses You get exceptional power the instant you want it. You are in control of one of the most potent machines on the road today. This may be a minus for a few people -- if you want attention, drive this car. You will be talking to strangers about it when you gas up. For cost-conscious folk, it gets relatively good mileage - 25 mi/gal. A summer ride by the seashore with the top down is an exceptional pleasure. The seats are comfortable and fully adjustable. The Minuses The convertible top must be covered once it's down -- not exactly an easy feat. Also, if you store the cover in the trunk, you can't put anything else in it. The dashboard instrument cluster malfunctioned twice, giving me incorrect readings about the amount of gas in the tank, the oil pressure, and the temperature. The top would not close properly and had to be repaired. The diverter valve for the turbo had to be replaced twice. Supposedly, this causes no performance problems, but certainly is annoying when air squeals through the bad valve as you depress the clutch. If you live in a climate where the weather gets cold, you need to buy winter tires. Otherwise, you'll be doing uncontrollable and unexpected 180 degree turns when it snows. Summary It's a joy to drive and an unusual, attractive car. So far, it hasn't cost me a penny to get it
repaired. But then, it's under warranty. Do you think Audi is going to continue to repair 2 recurring problems? Would I buy another one -- no, not unless Audi gets these annoying problems fixed. It's just not practical to be in the service department once a month for another repair. What quality did I get for the big bucks?
