Advantages: Well built
Disadvantages: costs/fuel economy
I bought a 56 plate 318 SE a few months ago, for the price of a new astra. Overall i have not been disappointed, and hope this review will do the same for you!
Good
Looks - not everyones taste but rather elegant in my view
Build quality - car is three years old and there isn't a single squeak or rattle
Mystic Blue paint. Looks a little dull in overcast conditions, but get it in the sunshine, and it looks amazing
Mechanical - 3 years old and not a single visit to garage to replace a broken part
Comfort - seats are firm, as is the ride, but on a long journey it's comfy, and road noise is minimal
Equipment - this is an SE so has a fair amount of equipment - not top end levels, but enough for someone who wants to drive a car rather than use it as a toy (air con/cd/mp3/trip computer/ventilated glove box)
Handling - Far more nimble than it's size indicates, steering is direct and has plenty of 'feel'
First Class customer service from BMW garages.
Down side
2006 car, so doesn't have Stop/Start Tech, so fuel consumption is a little on the high side (33mpg)
Mystic blue paintwork is hard to keep clean
Not the quickest (0-60 is about 11 seconds)
Souped up Corsas will always race you off the line and tailgate you
Service costs - not extortionate, but still rather high
Worth considering if you can get past the associated image of a BMW!
Summary: Superb handling well built reliable car
