Have just had to give back my borrowed 330d and I will now be selling everything I possess to buy one! The engine is phenomenal, not a hint that it is diesel with a superb gruff exhaust note like any 6 pot BMW but acceleration that will see off all competitors in this size of car whether diesel or petrol, including the petrol BMW's.
The economy is superb - even flat-out on german autobahns it still returns high 30 mpg and nearer 50 mpg in more restrained UK driving, not so important you might say, but it gives the car a very sizeable and useable 5-600 mile range. As for the top speed - well Jenson Button was recently stopped in one in France for doing 143mph! The handling is superb although the optional sports suspension is necessary to sharpen the steering for a more sporting feel.
Refinement is well ahead of the outgoing shape so if you are considering upgrading do it and in a completely different league to competitors like Audi and Alfa.

Any other car out there that can actually offer 40 mpg at 140 mph?
