My husband first gifted this car to me in 2001, and it's an excellent drive! It handles well on the road, and has a great mileage for a car of this stature (being a sort of sporty vehicle). It does consume a lot of fuel and can be costly most of the time because the optimum driving speed is 55 miles per hour, but most of the time you'd be driving at 30 miles per hour, meaning that the fuel efficiency is lower than at the optimum speed, but that's what is expected from a car like this.
The BMW handles well in both automatic, and manual, and by mentioning that I also imply that it has the ability to drive in both, which is great because after my first car it was difficult for me to get used to an automatic vehicle, so I used it on manual mode as well as automatic until I finally got used to the lazy way!
It reaches high speeds easily without struggling like some smaller, economic cars. It also has an automated parking sensor which is very helpful because the car is actually quite large in terms of width and especially length, so it comes in handy because sometimes your view of certain things can be limited or not there at all, as well as an average depth perception that can make the difference between a small dent and a huge crater.
The car also has air conditiong, a CD player that can hold a maximum of 6 discs, and is located in the boot of the car, a tape player above the radio and other standard features. The large boot means there is sufficient space for transporting many goods, and the leather seats are extremely comfortable, although can become very cold during winter-time.
There is exceptional space for minute items in the sides of the doors, and this vehicle is just generally extravagant, although after many, many years, the engine does need fix-ups every few years or so, as well as some other faulty things such as faulty lights, but experiences do vary so I won't go into too much detail about what I've experienced.
BMW 525 SE 1998,my wifes car for a few years, just sold about 18 months ago,not much wrong with it,just wanted something newer.I used it as often as I could though, lovely quality, excellent performance from that straight 6 190 HP gives more than enough entertainment for the average driver.Handling at least rates 4/5,economy was fair mid to high 20s mpg,but what do you expect when you drive like a hooligan?Ours was a well maintained 2 owner car with business miles but looked immaculate. We chose well, the car ran brilliantly, just needed a new water pump and radiator by the end after clocking up almost 150,000 it was still good for many more miles! It ran sweetly, regular oil, fluid changes every 10,000 miles and I am sure it would have lasted forever.Very well built, quality materials, plenty of gadgets,a spot of luxury for no money. We paid about £4k and sold 5 years later after putting 40K miles on it for just £1500,I think it cost around £30K new so it was really great value. We regretted selling it but 5 years is along time and it was starting to look really dated.Expect to bag a bargain now but still be careful, check it has a service history to back up the miles, these cars can take it and 250,000 miles or more is possible in one of these.Tyres can be very expensive and other items are not cheap either but remember its not a Honda Civic so expect higher than average running costs. No cambelt to worry about, bullet proof engine and performance is great,Highly recommended!
