Advantages: Top quality, as always from BMW

Disadvantages: Have to keep your eye on the speedo.

Where do I start? Try 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds. What about a top speed of 155mph artificially limited to ensure that you don’t start racing jet fighters on take-off? Or to look at it another way, there’s the 343bhp from the 3.2-litre straight-six engine. And this is all from a car that costs £20,000 less than a Porsche 911 and returns and official 23.7 mpg.
The machine in question is BMW’s new M3, and it surely must rate as the bargain supercar of 2001. Acceleration from standstill is bordering on awesome, thanks to the 269 lb/ft of torque on tap. And while your rival in his £200,000 Italian monster must leave the luggage at home, the new M3 offers all the comforts of a family car – plus, of course, the bombproof reliability you expect from a BMW.
Catches? Hardly any. You could quibble over the steering, which lacks the ultimate finesse of say, a 911. And you could carp at the firmish ride. But if you did, I’d suggest that a Lexus might have suited sir better in the first place. As for me, I want one.
