Advantages: Retro style, High specification, Comfort
Disadvantages: Poor fuel economy, Sluggish engine, Frequent servicing
This was a car my wife had wanted ever since they were first imported into the UK in right hand drive form.
The initial problem that Chrysler had with demand outstripping supply is now a distant memory and there are good deals to be had on a brand new car.
A bright blue 2.0 Litre Touring was my wifes choice, and after some haggling we managed to get a really good deal at under £12,000.
Now, first impressions are that the car is well built and it drives well though it still retains that inate, slightly wallowy, American feel to it despite having the firmer suspension that Chrysler adopt for its exports to Europe. It's solid, the panel fit is good and everything works just fine. It's very well equipped with four electric windows, mirrors and drivers seat adjustment, along with effective air conditioning and good ventilation. The instruments are set deep in three pods surrounded by body-coloured plastic shrouding. It looks retro and the effect it creates works well. The controls are intuitive although scattered somewhat randomly about the cabin, and the rear wash-wipe control is on a button on the dash, rather than on the steering column stalk which controls the front wipers, which is a bit irritating.
The engine, despite being two litre, is a slug. It's noisy above 4,000 rpm, and underpowered below that. And it's very thirsty too. Around town, expect 25mpg, and no more. Service intervals at 6,000 miles mean two services per year for an average driver which, these days, isn't really acceptable either. Most cars require annual servicing these days. And one other thing. This car has a very large turning circle indeed. It's a nightmare in tight car parks.
But it's comfortable and well equipped, cruises nicely on the motorway at the legal limit and has a large boot and generous room for passengers.
On balance I like it, but my wife loves it. And I suppose that's what matters. This is a car that you buy because you want one. You won't be disappointed if you like the style. But you might well be, if the retro shape isn't a big factor in your purchase.

MALU - 13.11.04 Off topic: thanks for your comment on my review on 'The Curious Incident of the Dog . . . ". I found the info on the net that Asperger Syndrome is a neurobiological disorder, as I'm a layperson I have to accept that, do you know better? I do hope that the editor has something convincing to say on the subject of the flod of 'and's, unfortunately I don't hear it. Have you got an interpretation? If so, it would interest me but I'd still be disturbed by this stylistic oddity, it prevents me from fully enjoying the book.
