CHRYSLER PT CRUISER 2 LITRE TOURING
My husband fell in love with this car as soon as it came out approx year 2000. Chrysler, an American company thought this car was going to be a great success over here in England, as it is in American. Although a big car the American people think of it as a mini. There is a huge following for the car in the states and just google the car and you will see for yourself. They add some weird and wonderful things to glam them up as in bumpers and spoilers and loud coloured stickers. They look like the old mafia cars in the 1920's. The style is second to none and I haven't seen anything close until this year the new fiat 500 reminds me of the old style cars.
In 2002 my husband persuaded me to go and have a look at one with him as I had bought an MG which although great fun wasn't great fun in the extreme weather we get here in England. I had made up my mind to do a part exchange on something else.
We had never bought a new car before but Chrysler was offering £1500 off the Cruiser. The car cost £15,000. I know cars depreciate but this is ridiculous it is now only worth about £2,000, even though still in mint condition.
The car doesn't do many miles to the gallon about 30 - 35 I would say (on average). It does look great though and there is a silent respect for other PT Cruiser owners, and most off us give a wave when passing on the road.
The running of the car in general is pretty reliable but any repairs or servicing is very expensive. We had the clutch slave cylinder (rubber seal went) go and this was a 'big job' as the gearbox ad to be dropped. It cost about £750. I think this fault was partly due to my bad driving as I used to slightly dip the clutch when resting my left foot. I have since stopped this.
We still have the car and will keep it until it is on its last legs. You can pick up a good second hand one for £2,500 now. I will say they are great for a family as there is lots of space. The car is also very smart inside.
The main big negative about this car is the turning lock is small - pretty much like a transit van, so makes it awkward to park (especially being me as not my strong point).
On reflection and hindsight I would now always go for a car maybe a year or so old with low mileage and perhaps just one owner, as you lose SO much money as soon as you part with the cash.
Ebay have a good selection of this car if you are thinking of buying one. If you want one but are put off by the fuel consumption go for the diesel. On average this does 50 mpg
Summary: LOVELY LOOKING CAR BUT QUITE A FEW NEGATIVE POINTS TO CONSIDER.
