I bought a Citroen AX back in 1991 and am still driving it today. It has now started to show signs of rust around the offside rear wheel arch but other than that it is in fairly good condition (a lot of the body panels are made of plastic so they will never rust). The engine has never let me down in a nearly a decade, despite having not been regularly serviced over the years. Fuel economy has always been relatively good especially on a longer run. The model I have is an AX 1.1 (petrol) Chicago which I believe is a special edition of the TGE 1.1 model. Ten years ago it was cheaper to buy than anything else on the market with the same specification (sunroof, alloys, velour upholstery etc) at around £6000 and there are several Chicagos that I’ve seen around recently that show no signs of rust. My advice is if you’re looking for an economical, nippy second-hand runaround for less than £1000 you could do a lot worse than plump for an AX.
