Advantages: cheap on fuel

Disadvantages: very expensive to repair

Just over 6 months ago, I bought a Citroen BX TZD (Turbo Diesel model) from a friend of a friend for £1000. Since then, I have had to spend in excess of £650 to keep it going. The hydraulics system is a total nightmare - constant fluid leaks, spheres that need replacing one after the other on a regular basis, and various other problems that I do not begin to understand! Now, the alternator has packed up and I've been told that it will cost at least £400 to repair. OK, I give in. I've decided to cut my losses before things get seriously out of hand.

On the up side, when it is working properly, this model is very comfortable to drive, and has excellent acceleration thanks to the turbo function. It is also very economical on fuel, averaging 460 miles for a full tank (approx £40 a time), but I very much doubt that the money I've saved in fuel has made even the slightest dent in the amount I've had to spend on maintenance.

In short, if you are looking for a second hand vehicle, steer well clear (excuse the pun) of this particular load of BX!

I am now in the process of purchasing a brand new Xsara Picasso 1.8, which I will duly review once I've driven it for a few weeks!

You wrote this sometime ago , so would probably be more detailed now . I had the BX GTi 8v version some years ago , and got rid of it when it was under 3 years old because I expected expense to come in this way , but was a fabulous car and mine ran very well , better than most 16v as well ,I should know as I took it round Brands Hatch many times against a 16v .

I quite agree about the hydraulics, when they go wrong they are a bloody nightmare-i fixed my own new pipes on the rear for about £20 for parts and two days labour. My non-turbo diesel version was an '86 model that I did 31000 miles in without a single mechanical problem

£400 for a new alternator? I think someone is taking you
for a ride; shouldn't cost more than £130 (including labour).
Maybe the garage was a bit shoddy with the hydrolics too;
although they do have a reputation for being iffy in that
department; thats why they are so cheap.
The BX GTi16v version has a great engine though; shame
about what its in.
