Advantages: Great fun, Reliable, Exellent MPG

Disadvantages: Poor brakes, Base models easy to get into

We have a Citroen Saxo 1.1i SX as a second car. It is an S-Reg and has been ours since new. It has a sunroof, imobilliser, remote central locking, electric windows and a drivers air bag.

I find that as a town car it is brilliant. Milleage is exellent and reliablity is second to none. Infact, I only have on gripe about the car. The brakes, or rather lack of. You know when you learn to drine and you have to memorise breaking distances that have been out of date for 50 years? Well with a Saxo you have to double these distances. It is a shame that the car has this flaw as it is great fun.

I have ventured as far as Scotland in it (I live in Liverpool) and found it a very capable car on the motorway as well as in town. The power steering is too light for driving at speed, but you soon get used to it. When you arive at your destination and come to park the steering redeems itself. With a turning circle of just 10.2 metres (according to the hand book) and the ability to go to full lock with just your little finger the car is easier to park than a radio controled car. (Which the aerial gives it a resemblance to).

If you are looking for a car for use mainly in town without too many passengers the saxo is ideal. Perfomance is respectable enough given the engine size and handling is superb. Just don't forget about the brakes like citroen did and you'll be fine. Oh yes, and the standard radio is a bit naff too, if you are looking at a second hand one find one with a CD player for similar money. Just make sure it's got central locking, as the models without are very easy to break into. My brother had a saxo without central locking and a CD player (an East Coast) and it was broken into 4 times in a neighbourhood that's quite a nice one. Mind you, all saxo's have an exellent imobiliser fitted as standard so they may get in but they'll never drive away!
