Advantages: Cheap and cheerful motoring. Many Saxos available.
Disadvantages: Feels the bumps and is slightly noisy to drive.
This was my first car, and I have recently sold it for something newer. I picked it up 7 years old in brilliant condition, from the outside it looked like it had just rolled out of the factory.
There was one thing about it though: it was bright orange. It didn't bother me though, I put twin black racing stripes down it and loved every second of it, it was a brilliant little car, ideal for a new driver.
The engine, although old and reletively tiny, wasn't bad at all. You could rev it high and be rough with the clutch as much as you wanted, but I never had a problem (mechanically) with it for the two years I owned it.
Despite this apparant toughness, it also felt slightly "cheap and cheerful", like you were driving around in a windy allotment shed. Because of this, it always felt the bumps quite a lot.
Due to the easyness at which they can be taken apart, many Saxos are modified. If you are looking for bodykits or new parts then there are thousands to choose from in the car modification marketplace.
The mileage is also desirable if you drive it normally, achieving around 30-40mpg in town.
The Saxos from this era are also better looking then most other cars from the same generation, making it a popular choice which can drive up prices. Getting one of these in a good condition for around £1500 is a bargain, but I found selling mine again to be difficult - although that may be because it was bright orange with black stripes.
Summary: A nice old city car with cheap insurance. Ideal for new drivers.
