Cheap and extremely Cheerful Xantia (Citroën Xantia 1.9 TD SX)

Advantages: Big car, the ride, fuel consumption

I had a 13 year old Ford Escort, which I'd owned for 2 years before someone stole it. I was thinking of getting rid of the car anyway, as it was starting to play up. However as a result of the theft, I needed to get another car sooner than expected. A friend of a friend was selling their Xantia - a 1998 1.9 TD estate with 138,000 miles on the clock. I've always steered clear of Citroen's before, mainly due to the thought of spending lots of money when they go wrong, but as I only paid £250 for the car, I figure that if anything goes seriously wrong with it I can simply drive it to the nearest breakers and get a few quid for it! I've only had the car for a couple of weeks, but I'm so impressed with the ride, the trim level, etc.

This car:
All the usual bits and pieces, air bags, immobiliser (which will hopefully stop the local neds from stealing this one). Being a Diesel it's noisy when ticking over, but nice and quiet when the windows are shut! The ride is amazing with this gas and oil suspension. The car handles well and goes round corners like it's on rails. The gearbox is - French! Notchy, just like my old Peugot 405 which i had a few years ago. Scary things - The Brakes which are fierce until you get used to them. Other than that, although it's early days, I don't have anything bad to write about this car. I would urge anyone looking for a big, older, load lugger to look seriously at the Xantia.
