Fiat Punto 1.2 3dr
Advantages: Economy, Price
I have had four cars now since passing my test way back in 2005. My second car was a 5 door ELX Punto which had served me well for two years, the only issue was the reg plate; I was 20 and it just bothered me that my car may look 'old' Now this car was a dream, it only ever needed a bulb changed in the whole two years; the only issue to crop up before I part exchanged it was an engine malfunction light kept appearing and disppearing but this did not affect how the car ran. So as the Punto had been fantastic and the best car I had to date I decided to look for a Punto as our second car as the Corsa was going to cost way too much to get it through and MOT.
Not only did I think the Punto was going to be reliable like the previous, I also like the size of the 'supermini'. For nearly five years I have had a KA which makes life difficult when you want a lot of shopping or you need to transport anything so going for the larger vehicle makes life in general easier.
So the hunt began, we looked at car garages but the cars were too pricey; as I was a student at the time of purchase we ideally wanted something under £1000 but as new as we could get. We started the hunt on Ebay and after a few unsuccessful auctions we spotted a car about 40 miles away, it was yellow (something I like), 3 door Active Sport. The price was £750 for a 9 year old car - not bad at all.
To me the car looks nice, smooth rounded frame with the sporty edge for the edition. The car has a long nose but a flat back which makes life fab for squeezing into small parking spaces; the light go up at the back and the car comes with both front and rear fog lights which has been great for the recent poor weather. The car has the wreath blue and silver badge on the front and the squares blue Fiat badge on the back plus the edition badges on the back and side. The interior is a blue cloth and the seats are a longer bucket type to add to the sports feel with silver edging to the centre of the steering wheel and gear stick. The bumpers are body colour with black grill detail. All elements of the body are different with different editions, there are grey bumpers, different lights and obviously a variety of colours available.
My car comes with airbags in both the steering wheel and passenger side as standard which can be turned off by inserting the key into the side of the passenger dashboard if you have a baby seat there. Mine are currently switched off so the light flashes on the dashboard to remind you when starting the car up. ABS braking system as standard which definitely comes in handy driving around town and putting on the emergency brake for the person not indicating in front. Power assisted steering with 'city' button; now this is my favourite feature, I love it for driving around the villages and parking and when I get into another car I am lost! It basically makes the steering even lighter so a small movement of the wheel makes a big difference. Height adjustable steering wheel and pump up seat with lumbar adjustment to make driving even more comfortable no matter how tall you are. The car has 14" Fiat alloy wheels, 5 speed manual gearbox and spare wheel. The key is a basic one where you put it in the lock to open but the car is central locking so both doors open, the car is imobilised for extra security. In the car there is a handy boot opening handle by the driver's door making it easy to open the boot without having to turn the engine off, i.e. if you are dropping something off or security checks at holiday parks. The car has built in speakers (6) however it had the standard tape deck so I replaced this for my own CD player.
The car has an onboard computer so you can track your milage, mpg, time travelled and odometer reading. The car is currently working on 48mpg which is a good economy for a car of that age but as it is a 1.2 engine I would expect a good return of fuel. Currently with the petrol prices as high as they are it costs about £50 to fill the tank up.
This car is supposed to do 0-60mph in about 12 seconds however it is very slow to warm up from starting. The car normally takes about ten minutes to get past 50mph on a cold morning which drives me insane, not only that but overtaking is near impossible as the car has no get up and go!! A KA is much more nippy and useful for an efficient drive I must say. The car is supposed to do about 116mph but I have never attempted to go there, I have done about 80mph in it as I did not even realise I was going so fast down the road, it does get a little swervy though which is slightly unnerving.
The car has plenty of foot space in both the drivers side and passenger, I have not had any back seat passengers so unsure of comfort. The boot is fab and could fit it hundreds of pounds of christmas shopping so I was more than happy.
The dashboard is handy for putting bits and bobs on as there is a well in the middle, I usually put my radio front cover and phone here; there is a larger well to the side ideal if you have papers, letter etc.; a glove box with ample room for CDs and cloths; and also a cup holder in the central column.
The display has onboard computer, engine temp., petrol gauge (computer also estimates how many miles left), clock and rev counter.
The headlights are also another feature I like as you can never forget to turn them off! When you turn the ignition off they go off automatically until you start the car up again.
The only issue I currently have with the car is the battery. The battery is new and I bought it from Halfords, however, something in the car is constantly draining it so after a few days of not using it the car won't start. This has happened twice in a month now and makes me feel unsafe going long distances in the car.
All in all a nice piece of kit but does have glitches; maybe its the age or addition?! Who knows.
Summary: A nice looking supermini but it has its faults
