Advantages: Nice colours, Inexpensive

Disadvantages: Shoddy workmanship, Poor quality

Christmas 2000, my father asked me what I would like for a present, and being a Daddy's girl, I asked for a car. I didn't want anything fancy, just something that had 4 wheels and wasn't a heap of rust. My father agreed, but as I didn't pass my driving test until March 2001, so he agreed to by me a brand new car, as the insurance was just as expensive as on an older car. After many trips to many car dealerships, I fell in love with a Fiat Punto, 3 door, 1.2 injection in demetia green. The dealership agreed to have my car delivered within 2 weeks. However, I did not get my car within the 2 weeks, in fact I didn't recieve my car until another 4 weeks had passed, and was given excuses like; 'it's in Sunderland. (It was ordered in Manchester)', when I enquired how long it would take to get from Sunderland, the car had moved it was now 'in Scotland'. By the time I got my car in May 2001, it had already clocked up 200 miles. I had a friend of mine look at it for me, (just to check.) It had hardly any oil in it (under minimum), one headlight without nuts and bolts (it was held in by the wires only!), window seals that leaked and a boot that didn't close without ripping the seal that surronds it, however I still love my car, but I will be having it serviced well before it is due, for safety reasons. I thought that I would just tell you about my experience, so that you do not make the same mistake. Fiat cars may be cheap, but at what costs?

I would not have accepted the car in that condition. With the headlamps condition/low oil level/mileage, you had rights to reject it at the delivery stage.

Add to that list the magazines 'What Car ?' and 'AutoExpress'.

It's sad that your first car has been a disappointment, especially since it is new.

Do make sure that you take full advantage of the warranty and get all those problems fixed before they get any worse. Don't accept any nonsense from your dealer. Tell them to get the problems fixed and make sure they are aware that you are losing out. Giving a full tank of petrol, or a set of car mats is a small price to pay for customer satisfaction.

Ab ove all, be firm with the dealer, don't be fobbed off. Your dad has paid a lot of money and you are entitled to goods that are of good quality.

If the dealer gets complacent (and some of them do), just point out that there is always Which? Magazine, Fiat Dealership HQ and indeed dooyoo to contend with.

Nice Christmas present to get, shame about the problems with it though.
