Fiat Punto in general
Advantages: Looked pretty until it got dirty
Disadvantages: Broke down a few times
Mine was a 2004 1.2l 3 door Fiat Punto in Grey. I bought it in 2005 and traded it in about a year ago. I must admit I didn't put much thought into the purchase. I worked near a Fiat garage and liked the look of this car - it had alloys and looked nice and shiny (maybe not the best way to choose a car!).
Having 3 doors was always a nuisance but I guess it's my fault for not buying the 5 door version - I always think the 3 door looks better styled though.
The car broke down on me a few of times. One particular incident I remember was the radiator overheating and boiling over on the motorway! The clutch also went at one point and the exhaust fell off! Many of my other cars have been fiestas and I don't think I've ever had one stop moving on me. Yes things happen likes clutches and exhausts but they tend to give a warning rather than causing the car to just suddenly brake down like Fiats. I did have one other Fiat (a Panda) and the head gasket went so I'm not particularly fond of them.
There are a number of acronyms for FIAT which garages told me about when I've taken them with problems;
Fix It Again Tomorrow
F$*k It And Thumb
Failure In Automotive Technology
Feeble Italian Attempt at Transportation
There's loads more if you google it.
I'm trying to think of something positive to say about it but really can't think of much.
Fiat's depreciate very quickly as well, I paid about 5k for the car but got very little when I traded it in.
Fiats are also prone to rolling down hills if you leave the handbrake off (erm.. maybe this is driver error rather than the car)!
In summary, I wouldn't recommend a Fiat Punto or any other Fiat for that matter.
Summary: Not reccomended
