The Fiat Stilo has an impressive spec for the price, and performs well with little effort on the motorway. However, reliability is what ultimately lets it down - with the electrics system particularly prone to faults.

Bought mine(5door, 115hp, 2003) 2 years ago with 200 000km, but have driven3 door version as well.Mixed opinions. Had to change all 4 injectors, but with the milage seems reasonable.I haven't seen any car of its category with so much interior spaceAnd options(all seats recline; 2 gloveboxes etc. and it is the most economic,5 gear car i have(and my friends) driven. I owned a fiat brava(1.6i) and apart from not having extras, the driving position,And way it handled was the best of any cars i've driven( audi a6, vw golf, vectra, etc)However, the 5 door stilo vs, although is pleasent, does not have that, while the3 door has it. If one wanting to buy it, for the driving pleasure, best choose the 3 door, but wantingTo buy a small family car, the 5 door vs is a good choise.

costly to keep on the road and is only good for emptying your wallet

I until recently was a huge fan of fiat cars in general my first car was a fiat brava and it was absolutly great always sailed through mot and any problems were minor and cheap to fix so when i decided i fancied a change i opted for a fiat stilo active and then began the endless problems wheel bushells and trailing arms ,starter motor ,clutch , rear part of exaust , front part of exaust, brakes callipers discs, indicator stalk,2 new batteries these are only the tip of the iceberg the list is truly endless and not one of these parts is cheap at best £150 at worst £600 this car has never passed an mot since i drove it out of the garage 3 years ago and has been an absolute nightmare so never again will i buy a fiat of any description after endless breakdowns and garage visits take heed if your thinking of buying one as your local garage will become your local hangout!

      A great car!

I bought my Fiat Stilo on the 1st March. I had previously owned two Vauxhall Astra's the most recent being a sporty 2 litre turbo. As running costs were taking a huge chunk of my pay each month I decided to look for something that was cheaper to run. I didn't have a particular car in mind I simply looked on autotrader for a medium sized car with an engine 1.4 or less. I finally found a Fiat Stilo 'Blue Edition' 2007 model. The car looks exactly like the one in the picture it is the same colour too. It is a limited edition model which comes with a Michael Schumacher bodykit, a rear spoiler and 17" alloys and a 6 speed gearbox as standard. The car is a 1.4 16v and is 95bhp. The car cost me £4500 with 18k miles on the clock and one previous owner. I have seen cheaper models though. The exterior of the car is very nice, it has a sporty look especially the 3 door version. The interior is also very nice too, the seats are sporty with a black cloth finish, the dials are white with an orange backlight. There is a built in on board computer which does the usual shows mpg, range, time and date etc... The first thing I noticed about the interior was how family friendly it is, below the radio are two spaces to hold drinks as well as a space for your mobile phone (the car has built in bluetooth as standard) and two spaces to hold change or anything else you may like to put in there. There are also drinks holders in each of the front doors and a huge space in the door for me to full with my junk! You also get a decent sized glovebox and a small compartment above the glove which can act as a cooler when the aircon is on for drinks! Initially I was a little aprehensive about this car having owned a much powerful car before I was expecting to be disappointed with driving this. However the car is very nippy, it accelerates really well and has no problems maintaining a decent pace on the motorway. I have recently cut down on my driving as I am on maternity leave and only now make local journeys during which the car averages about 47 mpg. It is in insurance group 4 and costs me £296 per year to insure (I am 26 with 8 years ncd and 3 points) the roadtax is also a 3rd of what my Astra cost me it's £160 for 12 months. I have so far found this to be a great car, it is sturdy and has a great sized boot, my daughters travel system fits in nicely, plus you can fit at least 2 possibly 3 adults in the back.

I bought a Fiat Stilo 1.6 5 door 51 plate last week. I bought it in haste and I'm starting to repent (hardly at leisure) already. It has been back to the garage I bought it from already with an airbag failure warning light and accompanying computer message, an aircon that doesn't work and squeaky brakes. It's going back in next Monday for some of those things to get sorted cos they couldn't sort it this week. I also found out from the Fiat garage that it's not too good at mpg either! Now I've been surfing on the net for 2 days and read so many bad things about it (apart from the odd person who obviously got lucky) that I'm seriously thinking of going back to the garage and beg an exchange. What to do??

      A great, reliable, comfortable car.

I upgraded my Seicento for a fiat stilo about 3 years ago, and I loved it. I chose to sell it to use the money towards my wedding, but I still miss it sometimes, and I now drive my husbands Mitsubishi L200 - a tad different to the seicento I started with. I had the 3 door, diesel engine 1.6 version of the Stilo, with leather interior, and it was really lovely. I can't remember all the special features, but I know it had power steering, a CD player, electric windows, central locking, another little button on the key fob which opened the boot (very handy if your hands are full of shopping, but also very easy to lock your keys inside the car), electric mirrors, a special city button, armrest, and I'm sure lots more that I can't remember. Driving my stilo was always a pleasure, it was very speedy and as it was a diesel it was cheaper to run than a petrol version, I'm not entirely sure about miles to the gallon and all the really technical stuff but the fuel did seem to last quite a long time, I think I would generally fill it up about every 3 to 4 weeks and to fill it cost me about £40 (that was a few years ago though, petrol prices may have risen since then! ha). As this car was a diesel, it was very easy to go fast without realising, I'm not saying I sped everywhere but when it's an easy quick car, it's very easy to go quite fast on the motorway without realising how fast you are actually going. The city button on this car was amazing. I think it is made for people who are in the city obviously, but it helps with parking. It's a little round button near the cigarette lighter ad when you push it, it makes the steering super light, you could literally steer with one finger, it was a great help for those tricky spaces. The only problem with this is if you forget to take it off, it is impossible to drive on the roads as the steering is far too light, but it's easy enough to just click it back off again. The leather interior really was a lovely extra and I would recommend it to anyone for that extra bit of luxury. I had no problems with this car, and I really loved it. I think that they are discontinued now, so you can pick them up very cheaply, so they are now great value for money, as they are reliable but stylish cars. I know that a lot of people don't really rate fiat's and I'm not too sure why, but my father in law is a mechanic and he said he was actually impressed by it, and he really liked it too. I think overall it was just a good solid reliable car, with a few extras that made it feel a bit special, I might buy a car in the next few years, and I would definitely consider getting another Stilo. Especially if they are really cheap now due to the discontinuation.

always deserved a better reputation than it got

I have owned a 2002 Fiat Stilo 1.2 since 2004, and in that time I have found it to be an interesting car to own- it does have faults though. As a fiat owner the worst thing about the car is the badge, and everything that goes along with that- usually terrible reliability and even worse jokes. The main fault with the stilo is the electrics, nearly every non routine maintenance job has been because of the electrics, most recently the horn broke, and in cold weather the 'skyroof', full length sunroof opens by itself and refuses to close, which I discovered to my peril in the worst winter of my lifetime. On the road the car is a surprisingly nice drive, the driving position is very high for a car of this type, and as I am 5'8'' tall I have used the seat adjustment to elevate this even higher. Parts availability has been very good (although the prices at Fiat dealers are a little on the high side, and the manual refers you to the dealer for a bulb change). Depreciation has hit these cars very badly, a car that cost me £5000 in 2004 is now worth less than £2000, but as it has only done 44000 miles, I'll be taking part in more adventures in my Stilo for the time being

It's a gamble, you need to be brave..

The Stilo abarth has a equipment list to rival the higher end models; Dual zone climate control, F1 style flappy paddles, built in voice activated Sat Nav, telephone/texting, trip computer, cruise control, 16" alloy wheels, MP3 cd player to name a few. Performance isnt bad from the 2.4 engine-138 mph and 0-60 in around 8 seconds, the car is fairly rare and the 3 door version is visually nice to look at. These things ultimately attracted me to the Abarth. However I have finally sold my Abarth, in some ways I'll be sad to see it go. The selespeed paddles are great, it has a good engine with pretty good acceleration and it's a nice looking motor in 3 door guise. But on the other hand Fiat probably love this car, they must make more money from it going back to them for repairs than actual sales. In 2 years I have had to shell out on; Front and rear brake discs, pads and calipers at a cost of over a grand (only done 12,000 miles!) 4 new tyres, 500 quid (thanks to Fiat cocking up the tracking on the 02/03 models) The car has been in for 3 factory recalls, mostly to do with suspension faults, meaning I was without a car for several days (Fiat refused to provide courtesy car) Consistent engine oil level low warning despite it being fine ASR/ESP error messages Selespeed gearbox failure message (proved to be a "phantom message" and was nothing wrong with it) Windscreen wiper failure High pitch, horrible squealing sound from the Sat Nav Loose connection error fault Left rear bulb failure Right rear bulb failure (three times!) ECU failures The worst thing is that I can't remember a week going by when a error message hasnt popped up saying take me to the dealer. In the end I just ignored it! Incredibly I have never had the airbag failure message, 90% of Abarth owners will do though. By all means if your after a "cheap" motor (in terms of forecourt price) get one, but it'll cost you a fortune to fix, a fortune in mpg (27 at best) and road tax is hefty. Insurance isnt too bad, but like all things depends on your circumstances and age. Oh and get used to the flipping computer beeping at you every day! I have to also admit, don't bother with Fiat after service care. It is non exsistant. I made this mistake, they never bothered to contact me and charge an absolute fortune. You know you have a unreliable car when the Fiat service telephone number is a speed dial on your mobile!!

Look around there are better alternitves on the market

1.4 5 Door 16v 04 plate - Went for the something different card and came out with something different that burned a hole in the bank. The car seem great to start with, no problems to start with, not much of an engine for the size of car but drove smoothly, with a nice 6 speed gear change. Driven economically could get 50 mpg but still get to the location in a good time. The trim was slightly better than cheap but still had a few faults i.e door trims were knocked off getting in and out the car, concealed glove box hinge loosened so much it didn't hold up and the glove box hinge wasn't strong enough to hold the glove box up. Over a long journey 200 miles, slightly uncomfortable seats. Engine problems, sounds like a diesel even though its had many services. All the springs have now gone and so have the breaks.... not impressed

          Hot hatch :-)

Right, first of all I love my stilos. However, our romance has taken a rocky road at times! In 2004 I sold my Fiat Bravo and bought a brand new 2004 Fiat Stilo Active. I collected the car from Ron Skinners in South Wales and was over the moon. I set off from Skinners to my home and after about 40 miles I had the "engine check" light come on. This was a brand new car! So, I pulled over and called the RAC (Skinners was now closed) and they came out, put it on the diagnostic machine and told me that their machine didnt recognise the fault code. To cut a long story short, we got the car home on "limp mode" and Skinners took it back. I then bought a 54 Plate brand new Stilo Active in grey and loved it. It looks sporty and is unusual (you dont see many on the road). I had absolutely no problems with this car at all. In 2006 I part ex'd that Stilo and bought a Stilo Schumacher GP 2.4. This is a beast of a Stilo! It has the Prodrive kit on and is in a stunning "schumacher red". Again, I've had no problems whatsoever. The one thing I will say is that its hellish thirsty, even when driven "sensibly". However, it's never let me down (*touch wood*). It has a gorgeous body kit and spoiler on it, 18" alloys, uprated suspension, uprated sound system and dual zone climate control all as standard. If you have them serviced at Fiat, I found them quite expensive, but if you go to your local garage for servicing you will have to drive round with the "Service expired" message on the dashboard as apparently this can only be sorted by a Fiat garage. Stilos are brilliant for gadgets with city mode (light steering ideal for tight parking spaces) as standard. But, be warned, I know many a stilo with electrical problems. So, take your chances and check everything thoroughly.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Be aware of what you may have to endure! Cheaper option may not be best!

When bought from new, this car promised much. My wife bought a 1.6 Stilo Dynamic. Packed with features that were more than she wanted at the time, we had a car that on paper at least rivaled the Golf, nay bettered the Golf for room, versatility and equipment levels. The first 18 months or so were relatively trouble free. The engine was responsive, a good workhorse that would sit on the motorway all day. Then the problems started, and from then onwards, things just went from bad to worse. All four engine coils had to be replaced. Various sensors failed and had to be replaced - not cheap either! And the one fault that seems to be reported just about everywhere else - engine management fault light keeps coming on and despite numerous attempts to solve whatever problem is diagnosed, keeps coming back on. The engine sensor light is more than just an annoying niggle. When the light comes on, the engine management system 'thinks' there's a fault, and whether there is one or not, makes adjustments to compensate. The result is inconsistent engine performance, frequent loss of power up hills, and stuttery acceleration. Now to my mind, it simply isn't acceptable to have this fault occuring so often and by all accounts on so many vehicles judging by the number of reviews I've read that describe the same fault. It's so frustrating - Fiat have in the Stilo a real challenge to the Golf. It's packed with really useful features - including sliding rear seats, front and rear fogs, electric windows all round, electric door mirrors, extensive computer. The spec levels are high, but all this is dimmed by very poor electrics, faults with the engine management system, and noisy mechanical parts which have to be replaced, and they're not cheap either. Beware when any lights fail - access to the front lights (well, the near side font lamp anyway) was only achievable by having part of the bodywork removed - in other words, a garage job, rather than a quick fix. God alone knows how the rear lights are changed - probably a garage job as well. The air conditioning system is probably the worst of its kind - frequently leaking and having to be regassed. If all of this were tolerable, then by all means disregard this review and enjoy. But the worst is yet to be!! Our car was let down not just by its poor reliablility, but also by probably the worst service backup I've expereinced. Upgrades or recalls were never initiated unless we spotted them ourselves. Parts that were diagnosed by the engine management system were probably wrongly replaced. And as for customer support regarding things like courtesy cars - quite unbelievable at times. We've had to give up trying to fix our Stilo. It's being traded in - fortunately by a dealership who is fully aware of the car's history and still given us a good deal. It's a sad end to a car that really promised a great deal, but couldn't deliver due to poor reliability and poor (expensive)customer support.

I purchased my Fiat Stilo estate 18 months ago. I have covered 40k miles since. The engine has proved economical and seemingly bullet proof. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the car. I have had numerous electrical niggles which bring a knowing nod from the mechanic, wheel bearings (2) rear suspension problems (heavy clunking sound = £250, seat belt problems, air bag problems.. need I go on? I will have to get shot of it, which is a shame as I had been led to believe that Fiats reputation for unreliability was a thing of the past. If only it was!! (PS I am a mature driver who drives mainly motorway miles)

          decent car at decent costs?

STILO Decent car. Proved very reliable. Good fuel consuption 1.2. Nice interior, but lacks good space, for carrying mountain bike etc. FAULTS- yes you do get warning lights for faults that dont exist, but they go out if the problem is only dampness in the electrics, but will stay on, as they should, if there is actually a fault. Suspension faults had been noted for irratic wearing of tyres. E.G. the front right tyre on my car had to be replaced due to this, but as yet, has not returned. Comfortable front seats, i drove an astra mark four and the seats kill your back after a short journey. rear? wheel bearing now starting to squeal, probably the shocking state of the roads. Reasonable result in the N-Cap-crash tests. The Stilo has been serviced properly. How many badly reviewed cars, of all makes, are badly driven and not serviced properly or at all?

This is the first Fiat i have owned and it will DEFINETLY be the lastOne of my friends has the 3dr coupe model and he suffers similar problems with dash warning lights. Don't be impressed with the reasonable price they sell for, the above problems are why.I have owned many cars over the years and have never experienced as much unhappness with a car as the Fiat StiloPLEASE BE CAREFULL!!!!!!!!!!
