Ford escorts, they have been around for years and in my opinion one of the best cars for the money you will pay for them. I personally have the Escort RS turbo model (E Reg) it has a 1.6 cvh turbo engine originally it produced around 160 bhp but mine has uprated parts and is in the region of 190 bhp.
It has it's good and bad points. The main thing is, where it lacks, other than petrol i.e.: heavy steering and bad road noise, it can be improved by buying uprated parts for example better tyres and better suspension, where as with the advantages, their dream ones which really make having the car worthwhile!
for a escort rs turbo you can pick one up for £700 but it will be a dog, or the other end of the scale you can pay £4000 plus to get a pristine model.
The main points to look out for when buying ones are

-check the clocks match invoices / mots
-make sure it is set up right
-check for rust under the arches (body kit is plastic)
-CHECK SERIAL NUMBERS as there are ringers about its sad to say
-Make sure the car is started from cold

as well as the points above you will need to do all of the usual checks when buying a new car, i would advise paying a mechanic to check things over for you.

once all of the hard work is done you can start enjoying your love hate relationship with your ford .
