Advantages: Cheap to buy and own, huge model range to choose from
Disadvantages: Looking dated now and specification on basic models can be poor
Ah my Ford Escort - my first car as you would expect i loved it!
I had a mk4 1988 F Reg Ford Escort Popular, here is the lowdown on Ford Escorts:
Ford Escorts had lots of different incarnations, ranging through seven model types and several facelifts (as well as hundreds of different model 'types' such as Popular, Finesse and Cosworth!).
The Escort is know to Motorsport lovers because of its Rally pedigree (mainly through the mk1 and mk2 and then later through the RS Cosworth). The Escort was sold to the mass market as the family car for that generation, and it certainly did the job.
As with most Fords, they are in the most part cheap to buy, cheap to run and cheap to insure. They are also very easy to fix and take apart when necessary. There are models exempt to this including the RS Turbo and RS Cosworth which will cost you a lot to buy, run and a fortune to insure!
I enjoyed owning an Escort and would thoroughly recommend it. It rarely let me down and the issues it had were always easy and cheap to sort out.
Later models came with a far better specification than older models as you would expect, with the 'Ghia' model coming in at the top spec with leather, electrics and air con.
The Escort model was eventually taken over by the Ford Focus.
Used Escorts are currently very cheap and well worth a look at, especially if you are looking at a runabout for work or similar.
Summary: Very good runabout and decent car to own
