I got an K reg escort 1.3 for my 18th birthday. Sounded a good idea at the time for the insurance but I've never been in a car so slow in all my life. The escort has a big heavy shell so a 1.3 litre engine has one hell of a hard time pulling it around. Sort of an ant with a tortoise shell.
The gear leaver is like driving a bus. I thought I'd need someone to sit in the back to get it into 3rd!
Nasty car. Slighest bump would kill the body. I clipped my cousins rear end (now now people) at about 10mph... it V'd the bonnet, wrecked the radiator and smashed the headlights.
Handling is also terrible. Steering is VERY heavy.
If your going to go escort, pay a little extra and get a nice sports version (or pay a lot extra and get yourself a luuuurvly cosworth).
Avoid like the plague... nasty nasty slug
