Advantages: Big name manufacturer, nippy for a 4 x 4

Disadvantages: fairly slow braking

Maybe the thing that sticks out most about the Ford Explorer is the speed which is a fair bit higher than most 4 x 4's. The vehicle is American designed and has been available there for 6 more years than the United Kingdom, where the right hand drive version was released in 1996.

The most popular model is the 4.0 litre V6 engine which boasts a 203 bhp, hence the extra pace of the Explorer. There is plenty of room inside, so cramp conditions won't occur. There have been reported minor brake faults, i.e. they don't slow the vehicle to stopping as quick as they probably should, but that can probably be accounted for by the mass of the vehicle being so large and hence so is it's momentum. Apart from the brakes the safety of the vehicle is pretty good, with it's side impact bars and dual airbags. It should be pretty safe from crime due to it's immobiliser and alarm system.

Overall it's not a bad buy for a 4 x 4, especially if you like speed.
