Advantages: Supreme reliability, relatively cheap to run
Disadvantages: No power steering
Here is my review of my 1995 Red Ford Fiesta encore 1.3l
Due to some connections I managed to pick one of these up for £800 and I must say I have been thoroughly impressed! When I bought it there was only 35,000 miles on the clock (thank goodness for old people!).
========Reliability========
This car's reliability has been absolutely fantastic, in the 2 years that I have had it nothing has gone wrong mechanically at all despite me not taking the best of care of it! (The first time I checked the oil after buying it was over a year after it was bought! oops!) This car is a guaranteed first starter every time, even after going on holiday for 2 weeks it will still start first time every time. Even if you do suffer from some reliabilty issues the parts that are available are so cheap it shouldn't cause a massive dent to your bank balance!
=======Driving Comfort=======
Overall it handles like a car from 1995 should, it's not great going round corners fast (or even going particularly fast) but that isn't what it was designed for, as a city car it is great, it is small, nippy when it needs to be! One down side is that in the 1995 model to the best of my knowledge no power steering is available which is a bit of a shame as it comes in very handy when you are trying to park!
=========Running costs========
As you would expect with all small cars the fuel you economy you get is good but maybe not as good as some newer cars due to improved motor technology. I can easily get over 40mpg out of it even when driving fast on a motorway. As mentioned before parts are so cheap so that is no problem you should be able to find them at any of your local scrap yards, I even managed to get some of the parts I needed for mine for free so it is always something worth checking! Car tax is ~£120 for a whole year which again is slightly pricy. But this is due to the way in which the road tax system works. Insurance should be very cheap for adults who have a few no claims years with them, as a newly passed driver I wasn't so lucky and was stung paying £300 more than what I paid for the car just to insure it! Even now I am still getting quotes of £600 so it's always worth being careful when you are a newly qualified driver!
======Summary======
A good, reliable litter run-around that does exactly what it promises. Whilst it isn't particularly flashy or quick the type of people that drive these cars are probably not really interested in that anyway. If this car had Power Steering then it would be absolutely perfect! It also does come with a driver's airbag which I thought was nice considering the car is 14 or so years old, not many other cars of that age would.
Summary: A very good cheap car!
