Advantages: Great Fun To Drive And Looks Great

Disadvantages: Just The High Insurance. Apart From That Nothing

I once had an XR2I for 3 weeks. I bought it from a local garage. It was a 1991 H reg in Red with TSW Blade Alloy Wheels. It had done 74,000 miles.

The reason I sold it so quickly was the insurance. I previously had a Rover 418 GSD Turbo ( also an H reg). The insurance for the Rover was £650 for TPFT. When I changed the car I was told it would be an extra £20 on my premium, but my insurance was up for renewal in 3 weeks time. Then I got a bill in for almost £1,000. So I tried another company but that was still £600+. The way I saw it was my Rover was a 1.8 Turbo and I dropped to a 1.6 and the insurance was still high. I found out the XR2Is are group 14 insurance, whereas my fathers Mondeo 2.0 16v is only group 11. I phoned up my insurance company to ask why it was so high and they said it was due to the fact that the car is very powerful and very fast. But the insurance for Mondeo is under £400 and would knock 7 bells out of an XR2I. The insurance is crazy for young drivers ( i'm 22).

The good side is the car is great fun to drive. They are quite fast and the handling is great especially when lowered. But even the standard set up is very firm.

The price of spares are good - very cheap. It's a great looking car, plenty of mods available.

I loved my XR2I but the reason I changed from my Rover is I thought the insurance had to be cheaper because of the smaller engine.

When I had it, it had been lowered by 40mm and 15" Blades and a straight-through exhaust system. Plus it had a superchip which made it very responsive and quick.

If you like your sound systems then the boot is not exactly big for a couple of subs. I had 1 12" sub and the boot had disappeared.

If the insurance came down I would definatly have another one or even an RS Turbo.

I think the insurance should come down for this type of car as they come out of the factory with a 1.6 CVH EFI injection system with 110 BHP.

A standard escort 1.6 16v would probably be more than enough to take on an XR2I and the insurance would be a lot lower.

If you can afford the insurance get one! A great car that is easy enough to come by at resonable prices.

I feel sorry for every person under 25 that gets murdered for car insurance. Most of us rarely have a bump anyway and it is usually some old pratt in a Micra that goes steaming into the back of you.

I once went out with a boy that had one of these - I can remember the car but not him! Kay
