Advantages: Responsive, cheap to buy, well equipped.

Disadvantages: Some poor quality parts, watch for rust

We've got a 1998 1.25 Zetec 3dr, its only done 50000 miles so its still in good condition.
What makes these cars is that lovely smooth, revvy Zetec engine, developed with the help of Yamaha apparently. Its powerful and economical, 75 Bhp out of 1.25 litres is good.
This combined with the smooth taught ride and handling, and the responsive sharp steering make it a sporty drive, but not fidgety or tiring. BMW could learn a few things from this car for the new Mini!
Equipment levels are good, with power steering, aircon, rear spoiler and fog lights all standard.
Servicing is cheap, everyone knows how to work on a Ford and parts are readily available, just make sure you use the correct 5W/30 oil or you will cause running problems.
Cambelt change is at 10 years or 100k miles, but I'd advise doing it a little before if you want to be safe.
Also keep a close eye on the lower body work, door bottoms, sills, wheel arches etc, they can rust there, so pressure wash the wheelarches after winter and apply some rustproofing wax if necessary.

Summary: A good value, good to drive hatchback.
