Advantages: Engine , engine ,engine and loads of extras as standard

Disadvantages: High level brake light , brakes, only driers air bag as standard

Friday morning 9h00 and I have just collected what will be my transport for the next few days. My initial reaction was dissapointment when I dicovered that the only car they had left was a fiesta, a car I have never been fond of. Well that is where the dissapointment ended.

As strolled into the pick up area I was pleasently suprized to see a metalic black two door with alloys waiting for me. It was the 1.6s zetec(around a 104bhp) Ford in my humble opinion have come a long way in terms of styling and I was glad to see that the new Fiesta had not escaped their attention. Spot lights added a certain cheeky look to the front end as did the little rear wing.

The interior of the car was spacious and I was impressed by the level of extras included, from a very capable but some what bland looking cd player to electric windows and leather steering wheel. The interior was quite sporty looking, seats trimmed in red and black and the driver side also including a handy height adjustment for the shorter drivers out there. The dials where white continuing the sport theme and all clearly visible. The controls all fell nicely to hand and although not quite upto the quality of the new Polo I felt that the interior build quality was none the less good.

And so to drive the little car. The engine was an absolute pleasure, not an all out racer but a nice combination of power when you needed it and good manners for town driving. Bury the throttle and it may well chirp the front tyres before the traction control kicks in. the clutch was light as was the steering, power assisted I believe. The gearbox was precise and had a very positive feel. Braking (ABS) was somewhat eratic and although generally competent I found myself really standing on them to stop even from 30mph on occasion.

Four days later and some 1500 miles down the road I was a little sad to be returning the car to Hertz (opinion on them to follow). My only minor gripe was the high level brake
light, it was placed smack in the middle of the rear window and thus always obscured the vision from the rear view mirror. Oh well nothing is purfect. Would I buy one?
If I was on a budget yes. A Polo would still be my first choice but none the less you get a lot of car for your 11 000 odd pounds.
