Advantages: economy, comfort, reliability
Disadvantages: interior finish, acceleration
The Ford Fiesta - a British stalwart in the motor industry. These cars are economical, unspectacular but (almost) perfect for commuters and nipping to the shops.
*Affordability*
My Fiesta 1.3, which is about 9 years old with 40k on the clock set me back £1,000. I think this is an excellent price for a second hand 3 door hatchback, as new models cost £10,595! Also the MPG averages out at around 40, which is excellent, and means I can fill my tank on current prices for about £25!
*Quality*
No obviously a Ford is not a Lambo, so the finishing of the interior is not fantastic - the seats creak, the built in stereo has six radio presets and a tape player, and the gear stick knob came off in my hand! But, for the price one cannot complain really, it gets me from A to B, and my gear stick is back on with super glue's help.
*Engine/Mechanics*
The acceleration is god awful, 0-60 in about 70 seconds, but then again this isn't built for speed, it's a convenience car not a sports car! The engine gives you value for money and works, not once has it failed me, I cannot fault it. The clutch can be a bit jumpy at times, but it is the same as any car, you have to get used to it and learn how it drives and then you'll love it.
*Conclusions*
A comfortable, affordable, unspectacular hatchback that does it's job without moaning. The engine does not fail, the seats keep you safe and comfy, and the economy is wonderful. Second hand prices are superb.
